Applications of Sine and Cosine Graphs

Introduction

The purpose of this webquest is to apply what we have learned in Trigonometry and to apply how to create an equation for the sine and cosine graph using real-world examples and applications.

Task

You will be gathering data on lengths of day from a city either in the United States or somewhere else in the world.

Process
  1. Go to the website timeanddate.com
  2. Type in a location and click on see sunrise/sunset
  3. For the parameters you will modify the year to 2013 and will change the month
  4. You will use all 12 months to fill out the table below

    Day of Month

    2013

Day of Year Amount of Daylight (min)
    Jan, 21, 2013 21
  5. For all 12 months you will use the length of the day for the 21st of that month.  You will calculate the day of the year for that day as well as converting the amount of daylight to minutes (round seconds to the nearest minute)
  6. Plot these points on a graph and use them to create an equation for a trig function.
