Simple Machines in Our World (Grade 10) - Zina El Horr

Introduction

Did you know that many objects you use every day are made using simple machines? Mechanical engineers use tools like levers, pulleys, gears, and screws to make work easier.

In this WebQuest, you will explore the 6 types of simple machines and find real examples of how they are used in daily life or in mechanical devices.

Task

In these pictures below, there is a playground and a garage. In a group of 2–3 students, take a few minutes to observe the pictures and try to guess what simple machines you can spot in them. This is not a graded activity—it is just for you to get an idea and start thinking about how simple machines are used in everyday places. Discuss together and think about how some of the equipment might be examples of simple machines.

After this activity, you will work in the same group to:

  • Learn about the 6 types of simple machines.

  • Find 2 real-life examples of each simple machine.

  • Create a Google Slides or Word presentation with:

    • A short definition of each simple machine (in your own words).

    • 2 real-life examples with pictures.

    • A short explanation of how each example works.

Process

Step 1: Learn About Simple Machines

Use these websites to read and watch videos:

Take notes on:

  • What is a simple machine?

  • What are the 6 types?

Step 2: Find Examples

Use Google or the websites above to find:

  • 2 examples for each simple machine:

    • Lever

    • Pulley

    • Wheel and axle

    • Inclined plane

    • Wedge

    • Screw

Use real-world objects like scissors, ramps, doorknobs, etc.

Step 3: Make Your Slides or Document

For each simple machine, make 1 slide or 1 page with:

  • Title (name of the machine)

  • Your definition (1–2 sentences)

  • 2 real-life examples

  • 1 image for each example

  • Explain briefly how it works (1 sentence per example)
