Cognitive Psychology, Behaviorism, and Social Cognitive Theory

Introduction

In class, we have been exploring different psychological theories that we can use in the classroom, including the Cognitive Theory, the Behaviorism Theory, and the Social Cognitive Theory. Now that we have learned a little about each of these theories, you are going to become the teacher and tell us a little more about each and how they are different from each other!

Task

Your task for this assignment is to create a presentation that gives a basic understanding and how one could use each of the theories in a classroom. This presentation should also include some information about the similarities and differences between those theories. Don't worry, you will not be doing this alone! I am going to assign you to groups of four. In this group, each person will have a role (so not one person is doing all of the work!). One person will be responsible for researching information about the Cognitive theory. Another person will be responsible for researching. And the same goes for the third person. The fourth person will be responsible for presenting the differences between the theories. For this assignment, you will be utilizing tools such as Google Docs, Google Slides, various websites, and YouTube.

Process

Make sure to go through each of the following steps to fully complete this assignment.

Step 1: Choose what role you want to play in your group.

Decide which person will be in charge of researching and presenting on which theory.

Step 2: Based on which role you are assigned, look at the following websites/resources.

Each theory will have different resources associated that will be used to thoroughly research. These may consist of websites or videos. After reviewing each resource associated with your theory, write a summary (3-5 sentences) of the resource on a Google Doc. Each person in the group will be working on the same Google Doc. Use this as a way to make notes about what you want to include in the presentation.

Step 3: Make the presentation

Now that you have completed all of the necessary research, you and your group will create a presentation to help teach your students about these concepts. Your presentation should be at least 10 slides, including the title and end slide. Your goal is to teach your students a basic understanding and how these ideas can be used. Remember to also include the differences between the three concepts.

Step 4: Turn in your work!

For this assignment, you will be turning in both the Google Doc where you wrote your notes/summaries, as well as the final presentation. Make sure to take a look at the provided rubric to ensure that all aspects have been included.

Conclusion

Now that you have completed this assignment and hopefully gained a deep understanding of each of the theories, think about the following questions:

1. Which theory would you focus on in your future classroom? What made you pick one over the others?

2. Are there any limitations that may come about with these theories?

3. Have you noticed any specific instances in which these theories applied to your own learning?

Each of these theories plays an important role in education, and educators need to be aware of how these may affect their classroom and students. I hope you are able to apply these theories to make your classroom the best that it can be!
