Understanding Cognitive Psychology, Behaviorism, and Social Cognitive Theory

Introduction

1. Introduction:

Picture a classroom where all actions are based on simple reinforcement (Behaviorism), personal mental process (Cognitive Theory), or by watching others (Social Cognitive Theory). What role do these various psychological perspectives play in how we behave and learn?

Purpose:

This WebQuest will help you to explore, understand, and learn of the main theories in psychology: Cognitive Psychology, Behaviorism, and Social Cognitive Theory. Through these theories, you will learn to tell them apart, examine their effects on human behavior and learning, and bring them into play to resolve situations of actual practice.

Background Information:

There are different approaches to how people learn and act under each of the three theories.

In Cognitive Psychology, Mental processes for perception, memory, problem-solving, etc. are emphasized.

Behaviorism focuses on observable behaviors and the effects of stimuli and reinforcement on them.

In Social Cognitive Theory, learning and behaviors are affected by what is observed in others and is then imitated.

Task

Objective:

You will work individually to research the three psychological theories, then use the information to create a presentation that outlines each theory's key concepts, differences, and real-life applications.

Requirements:

  • Define Cognitive Psychology, Behaviorism, and Social Cognitive Theory.

  • Compare and contrast the three theories.

  • Identify one real-world application for each theory (e.g., education, therapy, workplace).

  • Create a 5-7 slide PowerPoint presentation or an interactive infographic that illustrates your findings.

Process

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Research:

Begin by researching the three psychological theories. Use the following resources:

  2. Create Your Presentation:

After doing the research which you need to make aPowerPoint presentation or an interactive infographic that:

  • Defines each theory
  • It emphasizes important people in each field (for example, Piaget in cognitive psychology, Skinner in behaviorism).
  • Compares and contrasts the theories.
  • Must have at least one real world application for each theory (cognitive, behaviorism, etc.) in education, problem solving, etc.

Evaluation
Criteria Excellent (4) Good (3) Fair (2) Needs Improvement (1)
Content Presentation defines, compares, and applies each theory in depth with clear examples. Presentation defines and compares theories but lacks depth in real-world application. Presentation covers basic definitions but lacks thorough comparison or application. Presentation is unclear, incomplete, or missing key points.
Creativity The project is visually engaging and well-organized, using multimedia effectively. The project is well-organized with minimal use of multimedia. The project is organized but lacks creative elements. The project lacks creativity and is poorly organized.
Research All required research materials are used and cited properly. Some materials are used, but citation is inconsistent. Limited use of research materials and unclear citation. No research materials used or citations are absent.
Reflection and Higher-Level Thinking The presentation includes reflective questions and higher-order thinking. The presentation includes some reflection and higher-order thinking. Limited reflection and thinking beyond the surface. No reflection or higher-level thinking present.
Conclusion

Completing this WebQuest will enable you to understand Cognitive Psychology, Behaviorism and Social Cognitive Theory. In addition, these concepts can be applied to real life such as education, therapy, etc.

Reflection:

Consider how these theories influence the way you learn and behave in different contexts. What theory do you feel most aligns with your personal learning style or experiences?

Higher-Order Questions:

Think about how these theories have shaped how you think and act, and how the theories themselves have changed the way you learn and behave. What though do you think most correlates to your personal style of learning or experience?

Higher-Order Questions:

  • What can be done with these theories in relation to the digital learning enviroment of today or trends in social media behavior?
  • How might ideal theorists educate about such problems as student motivation and classroom management?
