Introduction
Florida consists of diverse ecosystems such as the Everglades, mangrove forests, wetlands, lakes, and coral reefs! Our diverse ecosystems face consequential threats from invasive species. These foreign species disrupt the ecological balance and can devastate our natural habitat. It is important that we learn and understand the effects of invasive species to maintain a healthy and thriving ecosystem.
What are the differences between native and invasive species?
How can invasive species affect a Florida ecosystem? (Choose an ecosystem)
What could be done to maintain a healthy and thriving ecosystem?
Why is it important to protect and preserve out habitat?
Task
Students will work together to research the effects of invasive species on Florida's ecosystems. Each group will focus on a specific invasive species and its impact on a particular ecosystem such as mangrove forests, Everglades wetlands, or coral reefs. The group will create a PowerPoint presentation that focuses on the difference between native and invasive species, and their effects on the ecosystem, propose management strategies, and describe the importance of protecting and preserving our ecosystem.
*Slides must include images of the invasive species and where they could be found.
Process
- Each group will consist of 3-4 students
- Groups will be assigned an invasive species and an ecosystem
- Students will conduct online research on their assigned species. Search YouTube for videos on the species.
- Students will create a PowerPoint presentation with a minimum of 6 slides which includes :1. Cover with title and group participants 2. How the invasive species arrived in Florida 3. Its effects on native species 4. What is being done to control the species and why it is important to do so 6. Ideas on management or prevention of invasive species 6. Reference page with credible links.
- PowerPoint will be presented to peers
- Conduct a self-evaluation
Listed are a few links to find information on your invasive species. You are welcome to find other sources but sources must be cited:

Evaluation
Content Accuracy (40%)
- All information is accurate, and detailed, and addresses the invasive species, its introduction, ecological and economic impacts, current management efforts, and proposed solutions.
Visuals and Design (20%)
- The PowerPoint is visually engaging and well-organized. Effective use of images, charts, and graphs to complement the content. Minimal text with clear headings and bullet points.
Narration and Delivery (20%)
- All group members clearly and confidently narrate their slides, providing concise and engaging commentary. Voice quality is clear, with good pacing, volume, and emphasis.
Collaboration and Participation (20%)
- All group members actively contribute to research, design, narration, and editing. Equal participation is evident in all aspects of the project.
Total Points:
- 100-90 points = Exceptional (A)
- 89-80 points = Proficient (B)
- 79-70 points = Meets Expectations (C)
- 69-60 points = Needs Improvement (D)
- 59 and below points = Failing (F)
Conclusion
By the end of this project, students will be able to identify invasive species. Students will be able to collaborate with their peers in research to understand how invasive species can be harmful to our ecosystem. The students will apply their knowledge to a PowerPoint presentation. The class will be able to go on a virtual tour of the Everglades!
