Task

Project:

-Students will be working in groups to create a role-play video showcasing an example of a peer counseling session where they practice active listening, empathy, and nonverbal communication. Each student will take on a role as either a counselor, client, or observer.

-They will also write a reflection on what communication skills they used and how these strategies benefited the peer counseling session. The reflection must be at least 1 page long.

Process

1. Research and Understanding Communication Skills:

-Read about active listening, empathy, and nonverbal communication.

-Watch a video on effective communication in counseling.

2. Group Roles:

-Counselor: The peer who will practice listening, offering advice, and showing empathy.

-Client: The peer who will present an issue to be addressed.

-Client: The peer who will present an issue to be addressed.

3. Prepare the Role-Play:

-Choose a relevant scenario. Example, dealing with stress, anxiety, or friendship issues.

-Write a script for the role-play, ensuring each member uses specific communication skills.

4. Create the Video:

-Record the role-play scenario using a phone or camera.

-Ensure you have clear audio and video, especially so the communication strategies are easily visible.

5. Reflection:

-After the role-play, the group will write a brief reflection on the communication skills used during the session and discuss what worked well and what could be improved.

6. Submit

-Upload the video and written reflection to the class platform.

Evaluation

Rubric for Assessment:

-Active Listening (30%): Did the counselor listen attentively, reflect back, and ask clarifying questions?

-Empathy (30%): Did the counselor express understanding and validate the client’s feelings?
