Introduction

Have you ever wondered which Native Indian tribes inhabited Florida thousands of years ago? Today you you will have the opportunity to go back in time and explore the past civilizations that were here before us. Your mission on this WebQuest will be to share with your class all the information you will find on these Native Indian tribes. Your goal will be to produce a PowerPoint presentation on your assigned tribe and present a poster/3-dimensional model of an impactful tool or artifact used by that specific tribe! Are you ready to get inside our Time-Travel Machine? Get ready and hold on because we are going on a wonderful trip!

Task

Your team will create a colorful and fun PowerPoint presentation and build or draw a special tool/artifact to represent the assigned tribe.

The PowerPoint presentation should include:

  • Period/Geographical territory inhabited
  • Food, language, clothing
  • Artifacts/tools used or invented
  • Culture/Traditions/Religion
  • Where are they now?

PowerPoint and artifact/tool will be presented to the class!

Process

Step 1: All students will be separated into groups of 5

Step 2: Your group will be assigned a name of a Native Indian tribe that resided in Florida.

Step 3: Each student will pick one of the following topics related to the Native Indian tribe assigned, and will need to do research for the group's PowerPoint presentation.

  • Period/Geographical territory inhabited
  • Food, language, clothing
  • Artifacts/tools used or invented
  • Culture/Traditions/Religion
  • Where are they now?

Step 4: Gather all the information you’ve researched, organize it, and create a colorful and fun PowerPoint presentation using fun facts, pictures, maps, and videos about your assigned tribe!

Step 5: As a group, use materials such as poster board, fabrics, play dough, popsicle sticks, toothpicks, paint, scissors, tissue paper, styrofoam, markers, crayons, construction paper, etc, to construct a poster or a 3-dimensional model of an artifact or tool that was commonly used or invented by the tribe assigned to you and make sure your group explains how it was used in one of your PowerPoint slides.

Step 6: Each team will have 12-15 minutes to present your PowerPoint and your artifact/tool to the class. Each student in each group will speak about their own chosen topic to the class. The student researching the Tools/Artifact topic will also introduce the poster/3-dimensional model to the class.

Conclusion

Congratulations! You have now demonstrated an incredibly detailed presentation of a Native Indian Tribe, and you have shared with your class their daily lifestyles, cultures, and important historical facts.

Now that you know all these interesting pieces of information, ask yourself:

  • Which was your favorite Native Indian tribe and why?
  • How were most Native Indian tribes’ lifestyles different than ours?
  • What is the most important thing we can learn from them?

Now that you have finished this project, you can better understand past civilizations and who knows? Maybe one day in the future there will be books and websites written about us!

President Ulysses S Grant set up the first reservation to create long-term peace with the native tribes. Find out more about it on the link below:
