Introduction
Literature is a powerful reflection of society, culture, and human experiences. In the 21st century, literary works have expanded beyond traditional books and poems, embracing digital storytelling, spoken word poetry, social media literature, and graphic novels. This unit explores how modern literature shapes perspectives on social issues, technology, and identity, emphasizing its relevance in today’s fast-changing world.
Through this lesson, students will analyze contemporary literary texts, compare them to classical works, and create their own modern literary piece to express their personal insights
Task
Creating a Digital Literary Piece on a Social Issue
Students will create a short modern literary work (e.g., digital poem, micro-fiction, spoken word poetry, or a short story) that reflects a contemporary social issue using modern storytelling techniques.
Process
Step 1: Understanding 21st Century Literature
- Watch: Video lecture on “Traditional vs. Contemporary Literature” (10 mins)
- Read: Excerpt from a modern Philippine short story or spoken word poetry
- Discuss: In an online forum, answer: How is 21st-century literature different from classical literature?
Step 2: Analyzing Modern Literary Works
- Compare: Read two pieces—one classical and one contemporary—and identify themes, language, and style.
- Activity: Create a Venn Diagram comparing a Rizal novel (e.g., Noli Me Tangere) and a modern Filipino novel (e.g., Ilustrado by Miguel Syjuco).
- Self-Check: Quiz on key elements of modern literature.
Step 3: Exploring the Digital Impact on Literature
- Research: How social media, blogs, and digital poetry are shaping modern literature.
- Analyze: A viral Twitter thread, blog post, or digital poem as a form of modern storytelling.
- Discussion: Do you consider social media posts as literature? Why or why not?
Step 4: Creative Expression & Application
- Project: Create a short modern literary work (digital poem, micro-fiction, or spoken word poetry) on a social issue you care about.
- Share: Post in the class forum or present in a live virtual session.
- Peer Review: Provide constructive feedback on classmates’ works.
