Task

Students will be able to make an exit ticket at the end of the class and write a short paragraph defining deforestation, listing its causes, and describing one impact on the environment.

Process

Begin the class by asking students if they have heard about deforestation. Write their responses on the board.

Show a brief video clip that illustrates deforestation, including visuals of forests being cut down and its aftermath on wildlife and the ecosystem.

After the video, lead a class discussion asking:

  • What is deforestation?
  • What are some reasons people might cut down trees?
  • How might this affect the environment?

Discuss causes, which may include:

  • Agriculture (plantation farming, livestock grazing)
  • Urbanization (building roads, cities)
  • Logging (commercial logging operations)
  • Mining (accessing minerals and resources)

Explain the impacts, such as:

  • Loss of biodiversity
  • Disruption of water cycles
  • Increased greenhouse gas emissions
  • Soil erosion and degraded land quality

Encourage questions for clarification throughout this instruction to ensure understanding

  • Distribute sticky notes to each student. Ask them to write one thing they learned about deforestation and one question they still have.
  • Allow students to stick their notes on a designated board or wall.
  • Review some of the reflections and questions together as a closing activity.

Conclusion

Deforestation is very harmful to our the community as well as others around the world. By recycling our paper instead of throwing it away, we will reject and prevent deforestation because doing so would require removing of additional trees in the future. So continuing to reuse paper would be more environmentally friendly. Its local effect on our environment is that it reduces oxygen for inhalation, whereas trees absorb carbon dioxide and create oxygen for living species such as humans and wildlife. You can save the lives of living creatures. Recycle your paper and say no to deforestation.

  • Provide additional time and support for students who may struggle with reading comprehension.
  • Allow for oral presentations for students who may have difficulties writing.
  • Group students intentionally to ensure mixed abilities, encouraging peer support.
  • Plan a follow-up lesson to explore restoration practices and the importance of reforestation efforts globally. This would build on the knowledge gained about deforestation.
