Exploring parts of the flower and its functions

Introduction

Calling all science lovers! Imagine yourself as a botanist on a mission to explore the different parts of a flower. The objective is to explore and research through selective websites and complete the activities to learn more about the various parts of a flower and its special functions. Researchers must complete tasks and gather the necessary information needed to further discuss the information that is gained during this WebQuest. Students will develop skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving skills through online research and activities.

The flower is considered to be the blossom of the plant. This is a part of the plant that produces seeds which in return transforms into other flowers through the process called pollination. This is a process by which insects or the wind transport pollen grains from one plant to another. Every flower is unique and different based on size, scent, color, and shape. Flowers require sunlight and water to sustain and create their food through a process called photosynthesis. https://www.twinkl.com/teaching-wiki/flower

Task

To complete the task students are asked to research the following:

1) To understand the different parts of a flower, the flower will be characterized into three parts: External, Reproductive and Internal.

External Parts

1. Petals

2. Sepals

3. Receptacle

4. Peduncle

Reproductive Parts

1. Stamens Filaments, Anthers

2. Pistils: Stigma, Style and Ovary

Internal Parts

1. Ovules

2. Placenta

3. Nectaries

Note that these are the main parts of the flower, not all flowers have all of these parts, and some may have additional structures.

Evaluation

Students will complete the following tasks:

1. Create a diagram labeling the different parts of a flower (petals, sepals, stamens, pistils, etc.).

2. Write a short paragraph explaining the function of each part of the flower.

Conclusion

Good Job! You have completed the Flower Explorer WebQuest. Now, students can understand the different parts of a flower and its special functions. Remember, each part crucial role in a plant's life cycle.

Science WebQuest: Exploring parts of the flower and its functions

The purpose of this WebQuest is to allow students to independently partake in the learning process by understanding results based on research. Grade 4 students will be able to learn and understand the parts of the flowering plant and how each part functions. This will help students to develop their critical thinking, problem-solving, learning, and reasoning skills.

Subject Area: Science

Title of Activity: Identifying parts of a flower

Theme: Flowering Plants - Parts of the flower

Grade Level: Grade 4

Duration: 2 Weeks

Focus Question: How can I identify different parts of the flower?

Topic: Parts of a flowering plant

Objectives:

For students to learn how to identify and understand the functions of the different parts of a flower. This research will be conducted by exploring various credible online resources for information. By the end of this WebQuest students should be able to:

  • Identify and name all the different parts of the flower effectively after conducting research.

  • Describe the functions of the different parts of a flower successfully after engaging with online videos.

National Curriculum Standards:

This WebQuest correlates with the National Curriculum for grade 4 Science for accuracy of information.

The teacher will do:

The teacher will serve as a facilitator to guide and track students' progress. Assist and support students who will face difficulties while conducting the research. Track and monitor student's progress throughout the research to ensure that the information gathered is accurate and completed on time.

Evaluation:

Students will be assessed by drawing a diagram of the flower and label the different parts. Students are also asked to write a short paragraph detailing the functions of the different parts of the flower. The teacher will provide any necessary feedback and additional clarification.

Extended Assignment:

In small groups, the students will be given the assignment to create a realistic model of a flower, displaying each identifiable part, and create a short poem, song, or jingle rephrasing the functions of each part.

Conclusion:

After the completion of the WebQuest, students would gain a personal understanding of the content. With the implementation of WebQuest students should gain the ability to retain information that they’ve learnt more effectively.
