Web Quest Initial Plan:

Duration:  Approximately 10 weeks @ 2 lessons / week.

Number of groups: 7-8 (about 3 or 4 members / group).

Standards / competencies aligned:

This WebQuest is designed to keep students safe from harm through the development of awareness and skills. It is aligned to the New South Wales Personal Development, Health and Physical Education as my major area of the curriculum. I hope to achieve the following outcomes in this area:

-        develop skills in establishing and maintaining non-coercive relationships and reinforcing attitudes and values related to equity, respect and responsibility

-        develop skills in recognising unsafe or potentially abusive situations

-        develop skills in responding to unsafe or potentially abusive situations and in seeking assistance effectively

Lesson Objectives:

-        To help the students think / learn about the history of Martial arts.

-        To help develop skills and strategies in keeping the students safer.

-        To develop team work capabilities.

-        To develop website knowledge and usage of the students

Student’s prerequisites:

-        By year 6 the students have all had access to computers before and are familiar with how to use the internet to gain answers to questions posed to them.

-         They also have used books to gain information.

-        They are able to look in reference books such as encyclopaedia and dictionaries to gain information they need.

-        They are able to use non-fiction books to gain information they need.

Classroom technology:

-        Ipads can be used for information gathering

-        Computers are necessary for printing graphics etc.

-        Wireless internet into classroom is not absolutely necessary but is extremely helpful

-        You will need to have reference books brought in from home by myself (see credits page)

Materials for instruction:

Please see appendix A for a full list of books used in this WebQuest.

The flow of the lessons follows: The Task:

In this Web Quest, you are going to:

  1. Research the words "Martial arts” and come up with a class definition.
  2. Decide which martial art you wish to study.
  3. Investigate the martial art including what the name means, history, modern day masters, any specific moves that may be important to this art and any sayings etc. that may be important.
  4. Investigate the martial arts masters that created your particular martial art.
  5. After you have investigated your masters, you will construct a board game using the questions each group has made up about their masters.
  6. Study three moves which could help to keep me safer where I live, place these on youtube?

As these students have been together for the previous 6 years they should be quite aware of who they can work with and who they cannot, therefore I would allow the students to decide their own groups of 3 to 4 students.

There are two major tasks that the students are working to complete, the first is a board game and the second is learning series of self-defence moves.

Assessment ideas:

-        An assessment rubric will be made for most sections of the process.  Please see the evaluation page for a fuller explanation of the rubric that will be used.

Support strategies:

-        you may have access to a teacher’s aide for support one or two afternoons a week so this will be the time that I would be implementing the WebQuest. The teacher’s aide is for a may be for a specefic student so they could be working with this students group helping to alleviate any issues that may arise from this student or they may be there to help the whole class take advantage of the resources that you have.

-        You may also have a computer coordinator at the school so this person should be given a copy of the WebQuest and any other information to do with computer usage the student needs will be directed to this person.

-       You may also have a library with additional computers and also a librarian who is at the school 1-5 days each week. You need to use the people that you have as supports.
