Health & Family Life Education: Health & Safety Education - Stay Safe and Prepared

Introduction

Welcome Students to another Health Family Life Education session

Every wonder why we take precautionary measures to remain safe in our surroundings or environment. Do you ever wonder what the best thing for you to do during or after a natural disaster or what type of preparation is required.? Lets use a wequest to find out.

(Teachnology 2024) “A Web Quest is an inquiry-based activity where students are given a task and provided with access to online resources to help them complete the task. It is an ideal way to deliver a lesson over the web. Web Quests are discovery learning tools; they are usually used to either begin or finish a unit of study.” In today’s Health and Family Life Education class we will look at safety in general, safety in disaster preparedness, and emergency. We are now in the hurricane season with three tropical storms already out, one of which could impact the island of Jamaica. It is important to remain safe, calm, and healthy during emergencies, disasters or unsafe issues that will be harmful or life-threatening. Although you may not be able to control everything but being prepared will make a huge difference and can save lives.

At the end of this WebQuest, you will make preparations and get ready if it comes. You will then be able to demonstrate by creating a first aid kit for safety purposes, disaster preparedness, and emergencies. You will demonstrate the purpose (s) of each item in your first aid kit and describe the situation in which the items are more applicable or suitable.  Now, lets see who is ready to protect and care for their family members' promoting health and safety, and is ready to practice safety through preparation for disaster preparedness and or emergency.

Teacher Page

My name is Anesia Scott, a grade nine Health and Family Life Education Teacher at the Spourts Moth Academy. Currently, I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Social work and a is currently pursuing a Postgraduate Diploma in Education. I have obtained five years teaching experience teaching the subject of Health and Family Life education, there are fifteen students in my class.  It is my passion to help students build life-long skills and to aid in molding themselves into better versions of themselves as well as being able to contribute positively to society.  Incorporating technology integration in the classroom I have chosen to use a webquest for delivery of this lesson. We are now on the topic of Health and safety education, I asked the students to create a first aid kit in readiness for safety, emergency, and or disaster preparedness. This task has a duration of two weeks for students to complete, this allows students enough time to gather the items and make the first aid kit. At the end of this webquest the students should be able to identify what is a first aid kit, the importance of a first aid kit, identify the importance of preparing a first aid kit for different occurrences through a demonstration of how to stay safe, students should be able to identify the contents of the items in the first aid kit and prepare a emergency list to include planning what to do doing an emergency. (Written document to be placed in first aid kit). The students will need a computer with internet access, paper, glue, markers, tapes, or other materials that can open and close such a box. Students will be assessed by the contents of the first aid kit and how well they demonstrate the items relevant to address any safety scenario, emergency, or disaster preparedness.  At the end of the webquest I will also focus on the webquest interaction among each student, assess how well they understand the importance of health and safety, how to prepare for an emergency, and disaster preparedness.
