Mythology and Modern Societies: Make the Connections

Teacher Introduction

Fellow educators, The school year and the school day are becoming shorter. Actual class time with our students is shrinking. At the same time the amount of material in which learners are required to be proficient  is growing as are the expectations for assessment scores. We are being held accountable, the onus is on us. This means that we must cover more material, effectively and thoroughly, in less time.

Because of the aforementioned academic environment, we as teachers are best served by lessons that overlap. The more standards we can address in a single, well planned and executed lesson, the better. I have designed this WebQuest with this in mind. The learners in this WebQuest are going to be covering a lot of material and using it to accomplish a myriad of goals. Therefore,  I have alloted ample time for this assignment. I believe that  two hours of class time and some homework assignments on the topic each evening for a week and two days of an hour or less of class time the following week is adequate for all but the presentation time. the amount of time alloted for presentation of the learners reports will depend upon class size, teacher style, and content. It is as important that we address the elements of this assignment thoroughly as it is that we address them expeditiously.

Diversity is a hot topic in discussions about our schools. Another hot topic is a lack of basic writing skills, with emphasis on the use of Standard English in written works. In this lesson learners will use a variety of their previously acquired skills to accomplish some new ones and hone some they haven't yet mastered. They will be using technological skills, research skills, comprehension skills, writing skills, organizational skills, critical and analytical thinking skills and verbal skills to complete this task It is not a simple undertaking, but I have integrated and organized the project in a manner that I hope will succeed in accomplishing the stated goals in an achievable and engaging format.

The objectives for the learners will be to gather and share informaton about other cultures and make connections between them and some of the language, ideas, and concepts that are familiar to the learners in the culture or cultures in which they live.

They will have to discern these connections using skills they already possess and some they will have to be helped to discover. I hope you and I and our learners enjoy this WebQuest and garner maximum results from its implementation.
