Overcoming Barriers in adapting the Mediterranean Diet : Budget-Friendly...

Introduction

Welcome to the "Overcoming Barriers in Adapting the Mediterranean Diet" WebQuest! The Mediterranean diet is renowned for its health benefits, but adapting to this eating style can be challenging due to factors like budget constraints, access to ingredients, and family or cultural preferences. In this WebQuest, you will explore strategies to overcome these barriers, making it easier to adopt and maintain a Mediterranean diet.

You will work in groups to complete three tasks, using digital tools and multimedia resources to help you understand and apply budget-friendly strategies, find ways to access the necessary ingredients, and consider family and cultural preferences.

Task

Through this WebQuest students will:

  • Apply Mediterranean Diet principles to design an affordable weekly meal plan.

  • Locate Mediterranean ingredients available in their local context.

  • Select appropriate substitutes for hard-to-find or costly ingredients.

  • Evaluate meal costs and make informed, budget-conscious food choices.

  • Connect healthy eating with sustainability and cultural food practices.

  • Collaborate within national groups to produce shared digital outputs (e-guide)..

Process

You will work in national groups to complete the three tasks:

Task 1: Budget-Friendly Strategies for Adopting the Mediterranean Diet

Each group will create a one-week Mediterranean meal plan that is both healthy and budget-friendly. Consider strategies like: Choosing affordable, nutrient-dense foods (e.g., legumes, whole grains, seasonal vegetables), buying in bulk and planning meals around sales and discounts, reducing food waste by using leftovers creatively. Include estimated costs for each meal and ensure the total weekly cost is within a reasonable budget for a family.

Task 2: Accessing Mediterranean Diet Ingredients

Create an "Ingredient Sourcing Guide" that offers tips on how to find and substitute Mediterranean ingredients in your local area (local stores or markets where Mediterranean ingredients can be found, affordable alternatives or substitutes for harder-to-find ingredients, tips for growing your own herbs or vegetables at home). You are invited to edit the Guide to bookcreator app: https://app.bookcreator.com/l/-O2ytdR6mAiwPzoQEh8d?c=ZT6NRBH and add it to the following Padlet https://padlet.com/meddiet4health/overcoming-barriers-in-adapting-the-mediterranean-diet-budge-zu1v122nb8ewtfxe

These include planning cost-effective menus, sourcing and substituting ingredients and evaluating food products based on quality and practicality. They also strengthen teamwork and communication, use digital tools to create professional resources, and apply critical thinking to real constraints such as budget, availability, and sustainability. Together, these skills prepare them to work confidently in food production, catering, health promotion, and other related vocational fields.
