WebQuest 12: Soil Health and Conservation

Introduction

Soil is a fundamental element in agriculture, vital for supporting crop growth, managing water and cycling nutrients. Despite its crucial role in farming, soil often suffers from neglect and degradation due to various agricultural practices.

This webquest will guide you through understanding soil health and conservation in the context of agriculture, showing you how to protect and enhance soil to ensure sustainable farming for future generations.

Task

You will be assigned to expert groups to research specific topics on soil health and conservation. Once you have gathered your information, you will join jigsaw groups to share your findings and create informative materials for a soil health and conservation awareness campaign for your school community.

By the end of this WebQuest you will:

- identify the primary components and formation processes of soil

- analyze Causes and Types of Soil Degradation

- evaluate Soil Conservation Techniques

- explore the importance of soil biodiversity in maintaining soil health

- collaborate effectivelly to develop research and presentation skills

Process

Step 1: Forming the Expert Groups

You will be assigned to expert groups to research specific topics on soil health and conservation. Once you have gathered your information, you will join jigsaw groups to share your findings and create informative materials for a soil health and conservation awareness campaign for your school community.

Choose your group and find analytical instructions in this Google Doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1iTkSWaWb1MRBBtKHMNHr0fRgcdAZL7IGSK2ActiOp6E/edit?usp=sharing

Each group focuses on a distinct topic. You will research your topic and prepare to share your knowledge with your peers in this common presentation in Google Slides https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1neL1OQ0SbFImUvPWzm0WSuokmbEldnsXl8Qazdp3aEk/edit?usp=sharing.

Step 2: Jigsaw Groups

Form the jigsaw groups, again transnational, with one member from each expert groups. Present the common Google Slides presentation durring an online event (i.e celebration of World Soil Day) held through Webex platform and in Webex breakout sessions and review key messages and strategies for soil health and conservation.

Step 3: Develop campaign materials

Create posters and infographics for an awareness campaign to inform the school community about the health and the conservation of soil. Add them to the following Padlethttps://padlet.com/meddiet4health/soil-health-conservation-32al3nkhfycccski

Step 4: Presentation to school community

Inform the school community and present your products on Wold Soil Day.

Conclusion

In this WebQuest, students have explored essential aspects of soil health and conservation through expert group research. By sharing their findings in jigsaw groups and creating awareness materials, they have learned how to communicate key soil conservation strategies. Their presentations and campaigns will help educate the school community on the importance of maintaining healthy soil for a sustainable future.

This WebQuest was edited by a teacher of  2o Esperino EPAL Acharnon (Greece) as part of the activities of the "Mediterranean Diet for Overall Health" (MedDiet4Health) Erasmus+ project (Project number: 2023-2-EL01-KA210-VET-000183592).

Students through this WebQuest will develop essential skills for a fiture career in Food Systems through a structured exploration of soil health and conservation. They will enhance their research and analysis abilities by gathering and interpreting data on soil components, erosion, conservation techniques and biodiversity. Collaborative work in expert and jigsaw groups will improve their teamwork and integration of diverse perspectives. Students will also refine their presentation skills by creating and delivering Google Slides presentations, which will help them communicate information effectively. Additionally, they will build design skills through the creation of posters and infographics, learning how to visually convey important concepts. Finally, the WebQuest will strengthen their critical thinking by requiring them to evaluate soil-related issues and devise practical solutions, applying theoretical knowledge to real-world problems.
