Introduction
You have been recruited to save the world.
Your mission: You on your own or with assigned teammates will enter inside the underground headquarters of the evil Dr. Smith. From the data that has been found so far, it is believed that Dr. Smith has developed weather controlling technology that in the wrong hands has put the entire world at risk of catastrophe. We believe that Dr. Smith has left clues to where this dangerous tech is located but tried to destroy access to it by taking apart the computer that is believed to provided access and the needed information to stop the dangerous weather technology. We believe he planned to destroy the components but didn’t have time before the facility was found. The fate of the world is in your hands. You will need to train to make sure that you have the code breaking skills necessary for this mission. You will also need to have detailed knowledge of computers and computer components so that you can assemble the computer without it self destructing. Good luck on your mission, everyone is counting on you!
Task
The tasks you will need to complete your mission are listed below:
Task 1:
Watch the following video
- At the minimum using the following sources to learning about binary code There are also additional resources that may help you located in the resources section.: https://youtu.be/USCBCmwMCDA
- Practice and review binary in Kuhn Academy: https://www.khanacademy.org/computing/computers-and-internet/xcae6f4a7ff015e7d:digital-information/xcae6f4a7ff015e7d:binary-numbers/a/bits-and-binar
- Paper review worksheet. Complete the worksheet provided by your trainer.
- When you have completed the worksheet have it checked by the trainer before moving on to the next task.
Task 2: Assess Dr. Smiths headquarters by entering the door passcode you solved. Use this link to enter your code
Task 3 Investigate the Dr. Smith’s headquarters for clues.
Evaluate clues and decipher as needed necessary.
Task 4
- You should have everything you need to unlock the information on the evil doctor’s computer but you will have to put the computer back together to retrieve the information that will save the world. Their may be traps installed on the components of the computer so if you don’t put the computer back together in the correct way it may self-destruct. So before putting the computer back together you need to return to headquarters to train before completing your mission.
- Use the computer component resources to learn everything you will need to complete your mission. Make sure to take notes to refer to later in your mission notebook.
- You must complete the matching activity before moving on to your last challenge.
Task 5
Assemble the computer using the parts left behind. Once assembled enter the password you found in the green book. Your mission commander will provide the computer parts for assemble and verify that you have completed all needed tasks. You may be asked to take pictures of your assembly and submit them to your commander before you power the device.
Have you successfully completed the mission?
Task 5:
Write your mission report. Explain what obstacles you faced and what successes you had. What skills have you gained on your mission. You may be awarded a promotion based on the skills and knowledge that you have gained so make sure you include a minimum of 3 skills and 6 pieces of information..
Submit your mission report to your commander.

Learning targets: Students will be able to say:
- Understand what binary numbers are and how to convert them to decimal numbers.
- Explore the ASCII table and understand how text is represented in computers.
- Identify computer components
- Correctly match computer component to description
I can:
Explore the ASCII table and understand how text is represented in computers.
Convert binary to decimal numbers
Convert binary to letters and words
Identify computer components
Describe computer components and their purpose
Assemble a simple computer
Standards:
- Calculate the binary (base 2) equivalent of a positive integer (base 10) and vice versa. (2.B)
- Compare and order binary numbers. (2.B)
- Computing devices represent data digitally, meaning that the lowest-level components of any value are bits.
- Bit is shorthand for binary digit and is either 0 or 1.
- Bits are grouped to represent numbers, characters, and color.
- The same sequence of bits may represent different types of data in different contexts.
- Number bases, including binary and decimal, are used to represent data.
- As with decimal, a digit’s position in the binary sequence determines its numeric value. The numeric value is equal to the bit's value (0 or 1) multiplied by the place value of its position.
