Introduction

Welcome to the "Discovering Themes in Literature" webquest! In this activity, you will become a theme detective. Your mission is to read stories, watch videos, and explore websites to uncover the hidden messages authors share in their work. By the end of this quest, you'll be able to identify themes in different pieces of literature and explain how they are conveyed.

Task

Your task is to complete the following activities:

  1. Watch videos that explain what themes are in literature.

  2. Read a selection of short stories.

  3. Complete a graphic organizer to identify themes in the stories you read.

  4. Play games to show what you have learned about identifying theme in stories.

Step 1:  Learning about Themes

Step 2:  Read Short Stories

  • Read the story, "The Lion and the Mouse" - Nearpod link from your teacher
  • As you listen and read, think about the lesson or message the author wants the reader to learn in each story

Step 3:  Complete the Graphic Organizer

For each story think about these questions

  • What happens in the story?  Tell the main events.
  • What is the problem or challenge in the story?
  • What lesson or message do you learn from this story?

     2.  Use the Theme Graphic Organizer in the Nearpod to write you answers to these questions

     3.  Share your answers with your group
