The 3rd conditional

Process
  1. Watch the video. What title would you give it? Why?

  1. Watch the video once again. Are the following statements true or false?
  1. Daisy is waiting for her friends to arrive.
  2. Daisy is excited for the surprise party.
  3. Ollie asked about the arrival time.
  4. Daisy told everyone to come half an hour later than Amy.
  5. Amy knew about the surprise party.
  6. Alfie suggested revising for the party.
  7. Amy was disappointed about the party.
  8. Daisy wished Amy a belated happy birthday.
  9. Amy was disappointed with the surprise party.
  10. Daisy was grateful for Alfie's presence at the party.

  1. Look at the following sentence from the video

If I’d known, I would have worn something nicer.

This sentence is called THE THIRD CONDITIONAL sentence

In pairs, discuss with your partner:

1  Are we talking about the past, present or future?

2 Is it a real or imagined past?

3 Did the speaker know?

4 Did he wear something nice?

5 How certain is the result clause? (высказывания результата: I would have worn something nicer)

6 What does the speaker feel?

7 What is speaker doing, thinking about a different past or a different future?

Check with your classmates and the teacher

Discuss with your partner first and then with the teacher and the class: when is this conditional used?

Discuss: how do you form a sentence like this? What tense do you use in the if-clause? How do you formulate the result clause?

Look at the transcript  of the video. Underline all the 3rd conditional sentences

  1. Do the the exercise  and match the halves of 10 sentences

  2. Make up your own continuation of the 10 sentences in ex.6

  3. Write down the continuation of the 10 sentences you’ve written, each one on a different piece of paper. Get in groups of four. Each one of you should take out a piece of paper and should guess which sentence it’s supposed to be the ending of. You should read the supposed right sentence fully.

For each right answer you get a point. The winner of you group is the one who gets the most points.

Who are the winners??

You all! 3rd conditional is no joke!

8. Now, homework. For homework, please draw a comic.

You can look for some inspiration here:

Its title/or at least one speech bubble should be a 3rd conditional sentence.

Upload the comic on our class’s google drive. We’ll vote for the best one!
