The Quest for Pi

Introduction

Pi Day: Learn About the World of Pi with Your Child

Welcome, math adventurers! Today, you embark on a quest to discover the mysteries of Pi (π),  the unique number that has captivated mathematicians for centuries.

Task

Your mission is to uncover the history, significance, and applications of Pi. You will explore how Pi was first calculated, understand its role in geometry, and see how it's used in the world around us.

You will then use the knowledge of Pi to solve real world problems.

Process

For the following WebQuest you are required to work in pairs.  After you have paired up you can start the actual WebQuest by completing the tasks below. Ensure that you have a tape measure for use.

Circles for Kids: Learn Definition ...

1. Circles exist all around us. Circles of different sizes and are used in many different ways. You can use the link below to learn or remind yourself about some parts of the circle.

2. In your pairs and using various sizes of circular objects, measure and record the circumference and diameter of each object on a table.

3.  Use a calculator to work out the ratio of the circumference to the diameter (divide the circumference by the diameter) for each entry in each of the tables you created in task 2.

4. Look at the ratio values you obtained in task 2 and answer the following questions.  Write the questions and corresponding answers in your notebooks.

 (a) What do you notice about your answers?

(b) How similar to each other are these answers?

(c) Do you think that the value of the ratio holds for circles of all sizes?

(d) What can you conclude from all of this?

5. The following links give some interesting information about the special number you discovered in task 1.  Use them to find the name of this number and a formal definition for it.  What symbol, if any, is used to represent it?  Write down all important information in your notebooks.

6. The value Pi which you have just learnt about has long fascinated Scientists and Mathematicians.  It was first discovered and experimented with in Ancient times.  There is still an immense fascination with this value today.  Use the following links to read through the history of how Pi was discovered and to learn interesting facts related to this ratio.  Include any interesting information you may find in your notebooks.

 Congratulations! You've finished this WebQuest!
