Introduction

Maps are all around us: from finding restaurants around you to looking at Google Earth for wonderful geologic features. But, are you able to properly read them? 

This short lesson will help you how to maximize your map skills and read them like a pro!

How can you locate yourself on a map?

There are numerous digital tools that can help you show your current location. Through the submission bin, can you give what websites or applications do you usually use to locate yourself?

These applications work through the use of Geographic Positioning Systems or GPS. Find out how a GPS works through this interesting video. 

 

Can you follow basic directions on a map? 

One important part of our map is the compass rose like this one. It tells us the cardinal directions: North, South, East, and West.
