Task
1. What did you take away from the powerpoint?
2. How does this exercise relate to any other exercises we already learned?
3. What muscle groups are needed and which sports would we use those muscles?
4. Other than sports, what else could you use these muscles for in the future?
5. Do you think you can deadlift more than you can bench press? Why or why not?
Process
After presenting the powerpoint, I will provide a video about the deadlift exercise. I will demonstate the deadlift and talk about the cues needed to properly lift without getting injured. Once I demonstrate, I will have a volunteer to come up and talk us through the exercise. I like to start from "head to toe" and as the student is demonstrating, I am providing feedback or asking open-ended questions to the students about the form. Once I feel they know the cues, we break out into groups of 2-3 students and start practicing.
Evaluation
During class, I always use teacher observation. I will observe the students practice the deadlift with proper form. If I need to make modifications for injures or special needs, I am able to do that at that time. At the end of the unit when I feel they have had enough practice, I put them in groups of 2-3 and generate a checklist with the cues their partner should be using. They will each take turns while giving positive peer feedback.
Conclusion
In conclusion, my goal is for the students to be able to properly perform a deadlift to get stronger and know WHY they need strong lower body muscles not only for sports but for future jobs. I want them to know if they were to walk into a gym, they would know how to deadlift properly and hopefully be physically active for life.
