Welcome to the News Media Exploration Webquest!

In this webquest, you will have the opportunity to dive into the world of news media, explore current events, and enhance your comprehension and analytical skills. You will start by reading a news article from a reputable source and then proceed to answer a series of comprehension questions based on the article.

In part 2, you will research further to create an infographic that visually represents the key points and highlights of the article. Through this webquest, you will not only improve your understanding of the news but also develop your research, analysis, and presentation skills. Let's get started!

 

 

 

Task

Part I - News Media:

‘Is this really fair?’ How high school students feel about being streamed into different classes based on ‘ability.

Read the article online and answer the following questions in a Word or Google Docs document: 

  1. What is the practice of "streaming" in Australian schools, and how does it affect students?
  2. What were some of the findings of the research conducted on streaming in Western Australia?
  3. How do students in higher streams and lower streams perceive their learning opportunities and experiences?

  6. How does streaming impact students' perceptions of fairness and privilege?
  7. How does streaming affect students' behaviour in the classroom?
  8. What alternative approaches are suggested?
  9. Summarise the main message of the article.

Part II - Infographics:

Create an infographic related to education and streaming to inform schools of the latest research. You may want to research beyond the set article. Have a look at infographics online for inspiration.
