Introduction

WELCOME!

This WebQuest is about FRACTIONS! Fractions are used everyday in our lives. Can you

believe that? This means that they are very important to know. If you like pizza, baking a

cake, telling time or even shopping then you use fractions often.

Fractions are also very fun! In this WebQuest you are going to learn how to add with

unlike denominators! To become an expert at adding and subtraction of fractions with

unlike denominator you will need to follow the directions in the lesson very carefully.

Performance Task: Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominator

Grade: 7

Strand: Algebra

Subject: Mathematics

Task

Duration: 1 hour

Topic: Adding fractions with unlike denominator

Attainable Target: Students will be able to add fractions with unlike denominators

Benchmark: At the end of the lesson, students will be able to add fractions with unlike denominators

Materials: Chart, YouTube Video, notebook, Internet, Computer

Objectives: During the lesson students will:

  1. Watch a video that explains how you add and subtract fractions with unlike denominator.
  2. Add unlike fractions using visual aids.
  3. Accurately complete problems involving addition of fractions, without the use of visual aids.
  4. Play at least one fraction games that involve adding fractions process Skills:

Key Skills:

  1. Critical Thinking: Analyzing and comprehending the concept of adding fractions with unlike denominators.
  2. Problem-Solving: Applying strategies to find the lowest common denominator and solve addition problems involving fractions.
  3. Visual Comprehension: Understanding visual aids (charts, videos) to grasp the process of adding fractions.
  4. Technology Proficiency: Utilizing online games and resources for interactive learning.
  5. Self-Assessment: Reflecting on individual progress and understanding of fraction addition.

Key Vocabulary:

  1. Fractions: Numbers representing parts of a whole, consisting of a numerator (top) and a denominator (bottom).
  2. Denominator: The bottom number of a fraction, representing the total number of equal parts in a whole.
  3. Equivalent Fractions: Fractions that represent the same value but are expressed differently.
  4. Lowest Common Denominator (LCD): The smallest common multiple of the denominators of two or more fractions.
  5. Visual Aids: Tools like charts, videos, or manipulatives used to illustrate and understand concepts visually.

Procedures

Engage

During the lesson students will Watch a YouTube video that explains how to add fractions with unlike denominators. It teaches students how to find the least common multiple of two numbers and how to write equivalent fractions with the same denominator. Then, it shows how to add the fractions and simplify the result.

The teacher will explain how to add fractions with unlike denominators using visual aids during a class discussion. Each student will be asked their opinion of how they think unlike denominators are added in fraction. Along with the explanations the teacher will show students how to find the lowest common denominator and how to make equivalent fractions with the aid of a chart.

Explain

The students will do an activity where they will practice adding fractions with different denominators using the visual aids as a guide. This will help the students to better understand the concept and the procedure.

Elaborate

To assess students’ learning outcomes, the instructor will assign an online game as a formative assessment tool. The game will provide immediate feedback and adaptive challenges to help students identify and improve their weak areas in the subject matter.

Conclusion

Conclusion

Wow, GOOD JOB! You are finished with this Web-Quest. You now know how to add fractions with like denominators. This Web-Quest has helped you learn that when you add fractions with a like denominator you add the numerators but you keep the same denominator. You did this by embarking on a quest for information, and by learning from the information you found.

The last thing you need to do is..... Write up a review of this activity.

  • What do you think you learned through this activity?
  • Did you enjoy this activity?
  • Do you know more about fractions than when you started this assignment?

Please answer these questions in your notebook.
