Exploring the Solar System!

Introduction

Welcome, young astronomers! Get ready to go on an exciting journey through our solar system. Your task is to explore and learn fascinating facts about the planets, moons, and other things in outer space! Are you ready to discover how much you don't know about the solar system?

Task

When you finish this Solar System WebQuest you will know a bunch of information about the solar system that you didn't know before! You will visit a couple of different websites to collect information. You will also get to create a poster about one of the planets with the information you got from the websites. A couple of things you will need to gather are a piece of white paper some colors and a way to access the internet!

Process

Visit the following websites to gather information about each planet in our solar system: 

1. NASA's Solar System Exploration: https://science.nasa.gov/solar-system/ When you get to the site click the "Planets" tab on the top bar and go through all eight of the planets and collect at least 5 facts about each. Write these on a sheet of notebook paper. 

2. National Geographic Kids - Planets: https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/games/action-adventure/article/space-explorer Use this website to have fun playing a game. Collect stars to unlock other facts about each of the planets. 

3. Create a poster of one of the Planets of your choosing using the five or more facts you found using the two websites above. You should have 2-3 visual pictures on the poster as well. 

4. Lastly you will take a space planets quiz to test your knowledge of what you learned about all eight of the planets using this website https://www.dkfindout.com/us/quiz/space/take-solar-system-quiz/ 

 

Evaluation

Your completed WebQuest will be individually assessed and evaluated based on:

  • Accuracy of information gathered about each planet.
  • Creativity and completeness of the solar system poster.
  • Performance in the space quiz.

Congratulations, space explorers! You've successfully completed your mission to explore the wonders of our solar system. Continue to explore the mysteries of space as it is important to know about! Learning about the solar system is good as it just keeps changing and evolving as time goes on. Get together with two other classmates, show them your poster, and tell them about your planet!

This solar system WebQuest is prepared for a 5th-grade class to help them better their understanding of the planets. This falls under the Science category. 

They will visit two different websites to gather information about the planets. They will create a poster of one of the eight planets of their choosing. They will share their poster with two other classmates at the end. They will also have to take a short 10-question quiz that goes over information learned from the two websites provided. 

Make sure to provide students with a computer, a white piece of paper, and colors like markers, crayons, or colored pencils. 

The time to do this WebQuest is approximately 2-3 days.
