Introduction
Welcome 3rd Graders! Are you ready to be meteorologists? We have a problem and need your help with finding a solution. The fictional Wildlife Protection Organization wants to establish a reserve for wild Orangutans and they need help choosing a location.
Complete the Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning Graphic Organizer as you go through each task.
Task
First, we must learn more about Orangutans. Then we will look at three different islands. You will compare the weather from each island to chose which is best fit to establish a reserve for the Orangutans. Then we will share our solution with the fictional Wildlife Protection Organization.

What is a Meteorologist? _______________________________________________________
Use the following link to gather information about Orangutans. Answer the following questions.
https://www.worldwildlife.org/stories/where-do-orangutans-live-and-eight-other-orangutan-facts
1) What are the only islands that Orangutans are found? _______________________________________________________
2) What continent do Orangutans live on?
_______________________________________________________
3) What is the ecosystem of Orangutans?
_______________________________________________________
4) Why do you think the fictional Wildlife Protection Organization wants to establish a reserve for wild Orangutans? _______________________________________________________
Use the following link to search ecosystem of Orangutans.

Write three characteristics of the ecosystem searched.
1)_____________________________________________________
2)_____________________________________________________
3)_____________________________________________________
Now, we have some data to analyze. In the Island Weather Report chart we have the temperature and precipitation data for three Islands. You are analyze the patterns and compare data for Arc Island, Blue Island, and Creek Island. You will then choose which Island is best for the reserve and use evidence to explain your reasoning using your graphic organizer.
1) Which island is hottest? _____________________
2) Which island is rainiest? __________________
Evaluation
You did it! You have really put in the work as Meteorologists today. I'm sure the Orangutans will really be satisfied with the reserve. Now, all we have to do is use the information we collected to write a letter to The fictional Wildlife Protection Organization. You will go back to your desk and type a letter. Use your graphic organizer and your questions with the answer written.
Conclusion
Congratulations! You have really showed your true potential as a meteorologists. I am so proud of you all. The fictional Wildlife Protection Organization is eager to receive your findings!

Performance Expectation
3-ESS201 Represent data in tables and graphical displays to describe typical weather condition expected during a particular season.
Disciplinary Core Ideas: ESS2.D Weather and Climate: Scientist record patterns of weather across different times and areas so that they can make prediction about what kind of weather might happen net.
Crosscutting Concepts: Patterns
Consistent measurement allows students to discern patterns in weather data.
Scientists can use data tables to show how the weather changes over time.
Looking at the records of weather over time can help us identify weather patterns.
There are seasonal patterns that help people predict future weather.
Weather scientists, called meteorologists, use weather patterns to predict typical weather conditions during a particular season in different areas.
