3.CA.2: Solve real-world problems involving addition and subtraction of multi-digit whole numbers.

Introduction

During this Web Quest we will be learning how to solve real world addition and subtraction problems with multiple digits. I made this Web Quest to have fun while learning the importance of addition and subtraction in real world situations!

Task

We will start off by learning about some different real world examples that we can use addition and subtraction in. Then we will all come together to create different examples of how multiple digit addition and subtraction can be used in real life. After having came up with one example you will find a buddy to swap examples with each of you will come tell me how your buddy's example uses addition and subtraction in the real world.

Process

First, you will have 5 minutes in class to come up with a good example of a time when you or someone you know have used math in real life.

Second, you can choose one buddy to give your idea to and they will figure out an addition or subtraction problem to go with that example.

Third, use your buddy's example to come up with an addition or subtraction problem that goes with that example.

Lastly, come see me with your math problem and show me how you solved it and whether or not it is addition or subtraction.

Evaluation

The problems will be graded based on participation and will be discussed together in a class discussion. If you have did not complete your math problem or your example you will not get the participation grade for it.

Conclusion

During the group discussion I will be answering questions and we will be doing a worksheet on this topic that will be for a grade. So please make sure you ask any questions that you may have during the group discussion or come see me while you are working on the worksheet!

This Web Quest is to expand upon the topic of how math is useful in real world situations. Doing this activity in class can help students further understand how to use addition and subtraction but also how to use it in their daily lives. Since children are still growing they may not understand why we need to learn addition and subtraction but this is a good way to show them that it is used in every day life.
