Introduction
In this WebQuest you will get to better understand how to read and create a bar graph. The goal is for you to collect your own data and put it into a bar graph correctly. This WebQuest will get you the practice of demonstrating and understanding of classifying. The goal is for you to walk away feeling confident that you know how to read and produce data on a bar graph.
Indiana State Standard:
M3.1: Demonstrate understanding of classifying
K.DA.1 With guidance, collect and organize data into simple bar graphs, pictographs, and/or tables to identify patterns and make comparisons.
Task
Your task is to take a fun size bag of m&m's and separate them into groups by color. After you have you groups you will write down the number of each color you have. This is you collecting your data. Once you have your data, you will need to draw a bar graph on a piece of paper, label the axis and draw the bars. Once you have that practice complete, you will go to the link provided to do your assessment. You just need to copy your drawing into the online bar graph you will have to build. Interactivate: Bar Graph (shodor.org)
Process
Part 1: collect data
- group m&m's by color
- count each color
-write down the number of each color
Part 2: draw bar graph on paper
- label the axis
- number the y axis with numbers 1-?, x axis with colors
- draw the bars
Part 3: online graph
- go to link Interactivate: Bar Graph (shodor.org)
-copy drawing into online graph
Part 4: eat m&m's
HAVE FUN LEARNING

Evaluation
I will be evaluating you on your understanding of using a bar graph. You will be graded on whether or not your data collected matches the bar graph, if the axis' are labeled correctly and if all steps were completed correctly. You can earn up to 30 points.
| graph matches data collected | yes-10 points | partially-5 points | no-0 points |
| axis' labeled correctly | yes-10 points | partially-5 points | no-0 points |
| directions followed | yes-10 points | partially-5 points | no-0 points |

Conclusion
In conclusion I would like to thank you for taking part in my WebQuest. I hope that you enjoyed it. I hope that you are feeling confident and comfortable with working with a bar graph. I hope this WebQuest helped you further your understanding. To further your understanding, you can go back to that link Interactivate: Bar Graph (shodor.org) and collect more data to put into the graph. For example, you can ask your classmates their favorite candy and that will be your data to put into the graph.
