"Learning Styles"

Introduction

In the classroom, students need to be intrigued before they began to really learn anything. In order to hook” students it is important to come up with wow factors that can grab students’ attention.

As a “hook” of the lesson I decided to show a short video about “Learning Styles” and ask the following questions using brainstorming method:

Brainstorming

What are “Learning Styles”

How do you learn best? (in order to answer this question I can ask students to enter  Miro Board https://miro.com/ where students will stick their thoughts and everybody can be able to see them visually).

Then it is time to watch video about “Learning Styles”

In this WebQuest, you will find a variety of approaches designed to meet the unique learning needs of students. I've included activities tailored for visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners, as well as assessments and standards-based activities.  I used some resources to create an engaging and effective lesson that meet individual student needs.

1. I will discuss and define general learning style characteristics. Then we will discuss how students do homework and the environment in which they work best when completing homework. I can ask students to respond to the following two scenarios and choose which best describes their style.

     a. You lie on the floor, with the radio on, munching a snack while you finish your homework assignment.

     b. You sit at a desk, in a quiet room to finish your homework assignment

2. After that I can brainstorm other learning styles. I will include discussions about classroom environments and how they relate to learning. Discussion of negative learning environments may lead to a better understanding of students’ preferred learning style.

3. Discuss the three learning styles, using the worksheet information. Explain to students that there are different

working environments in the classroom; for example, some people prefer to work where there is lots of visual stimulus and activity, others prefer a “hands on” approach. Some prefer written instructions, some like graphic images, others like to listen. Have students then go back to the original two scenarios and explain which learning style(s) they represent.

4.Before having students take the “Learning Styles” I will ask them make a prediction about their primary learning style and have them discuss their evidence with a partner or their group.

Task

Learning styles refer to the differences in how individuals perceive  information. These differences may involve how individuals receive, process, and retain information. Research has identified three primary types of learning styles: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. However, it's important to note that individuals often have different preferences for how they learn best, and it's useful to explore a variety of teaching strategies to reach each learner.

Through excelling a single or different learning styles and preferences students can be able to acquire, process, and retain information within the classroom. Understanding their own and others' learning styles can help them improve their communication, collaboration, and performance in the academic life.

I decided to include worksheets, activities, discussions within this lesson.

Infographics

Create and use infographics to present information in a visually engaging way.

Colour and font

Use colours and fonts to highlight key points and provide visual aids.

Images and videos

Include images and videos that complement your lesson content.

Process

Warm-up activity. Watching video and brainstorming

Topic delivery. (Multimedia Presentation) + Video about “Learning Styles”

Task 1

Go to the assigned computer lab to go through the Index of Learning Styles Questionnaire.

Once in the computer lab have students go to http://www.engr.ncsu.edu/learningstyles/ilsweb.html

This opens up to the survey for the NCSU Index of Learning Styles Questionnaire.

Have the students read the directions and go through the 20-question survey.

When they have finished they need to print their results.

Assign reflection questions to be due at the discretion of each teacher

Task 2

Hand out the “More About Learning Styles” worksheet and have students use a highlighter, marker or colored pencil to

“highlight” the column that applies to their primary learning styles.  Have them check-off the items that describe them in the “What you like and how you learn” section.  Have students review the “Good study habits for you” section, and have them pick two to three study habits they plan to use during the First Quarter to improve their academic success.

I also decided to include an article “” from which students can get data concerning of “Learning Styles” and ask them to share their thoughts and feelings regarding to the article.

Review the directions for the reflection.  If time permits, have them brainstorm on a separate sheet and discuss their ideas with a partner before writing their reflection. They do not have enough space to answer all of the questions, so have them choose a few to respond to in their reflection

Evaluation

It is important to identify the learning styles of each student to better tailor individualized learning experiences. A simple teaching style inventory like online quizzes, group activity and task performance can help support identification of each students' particular learning style. Once identified, vary the lesson activities to better reach each student in class. This can result in greater retention of course materials aiding both individuals and the overall class.

Conclusion

At the end of the lesson, students will be engaged to share their thoughts and experience on the topic. What they have perceived and discovered.  Brief question about the impact of this WebQuest on students transform and further academic performance.

The following ideas should be understood by the students at a basic level before to this lesson:

Teaching to a wide range of learning styles can be challenging, but it also ensures that each of the students is getting the attention and instruction they need to succeed. This WebQuest offers a variety of  resources to help make your lesson plans more engaging and inclusive.

Introduce the topic visually

Show a visual graphic or video to engage visual learners and introduce the topic.

 Provide auditory instructions

Give instructions or lecture audibly to engage auditory learners and provide clear directions.

Engage kinesthetic learners

Incorporate a hands-on activity or game that reinforces the lesson topic.
