Introduction
Your name: Dr. Bond
Your task should you accept this assignment is to create a fictitious case study of a person who has something wrong with them that could be indicated by a urinalysis. A urinalysis is done on a person’s urine, and it is a diagnostic instrument that can indicate everything from a urinary tract infection, kidney issues or even diabetes. You will first learn about how a urinalysis works using an online simulation. Then you will read about a fictitious case study then you will create your own fictitious case study in which your subject has some symptoms, and you will help diagnose what potential condition they have.
Task
What you need to include in your case study:
- Name of subject/patient
- Occupation of subject
- Activity level of subject
- Reason why the subject has gone to the doctor/clinic:
Potential reasons for a urinalysis are:
-
- Screening for early signs of disease (diabetes, kidney disease, kidney or bladder cancer, bacteria or yeast infection, urinary infection, liver damage)
- An explanation of what a urine test could show.
- What ficitious abnormal results does your subject have?
- You may complete this task alone or with a partner
To begin your task, you need to learn some background info on how a urinalysis is done.
Process
First learn about how a urinalysis is done:
https://www.humanbiomedia.org/urine-test-strip-simulation/#read-test-strip
A)Use the website and slide over the urine test strip using the “arrow” in the animation.
What abnormal test results are shown on the urine test strip?
B) Go to- http://library.med.utah.edu/WebPath/TUTORIAL/URINE/URINE.html
Make sure you use the website to get your findings not Google.
- According to the website what three unnoticed disorders might be found through a urinalysis
- What is the normal urine volume within a 24-hour period? _______________________
- What does turbidity show in a urinalysis test?
- What could red urine indicate?
- What do the presence of the following in urine mean for the patient:
Red Blood Cells
Glucose
Ketones
Leukocytes
C) Read the fictitious case study below.
This example is taken from Human Bio Media and is the general information for your fictitious person.
“Personal and Medical History
Your subject is 40 years old and works as a consultant from home. For much of her day, she sits in front of a computer and conducts financial transactions.
After moving into a management position, her work schedule increased to a point where it interfered with her exercise routine.
As a result, she gained 50 pounds over the past two years. Your subject also reports urinating frequently and is often hungry, thirsty, and fatigued.
Your subject is visiting your clinic for a physical exam. Her last exam was performed several years ago but indicated she was in good health.”

D) Create your own case study using the requirements in the task.
- What fictitious abnormal results does your subject have?
- You may complete this task alone or with a partner

Conclusion
After completing the WebQuest reflect on your own or with your partner: what you learned about urinalysis, how case studies can help students learn about medical tests/conditions and how a urinalysis works. You will need to have a paragraph in your response and be specific in your response to the prompt. You will need to reflect on how effective you felt this WebQuest was in learning about the specific medical procedure a urinalysis. You will be graded with a rubric and should make sure you review your work and the rubric to make sure you covered all the portions of the multi-step assignment.
