Introduction
We have been discussing the wide variety of amphibians, from the commonly known frogs and toads to the less common skinks and newts to the rare slow worms.
Task
Using your knowledge of these amphibians, create your own! Choose one of the three orders of amphibians (Caudata, Gymniophora, or Anura) and draw your new member of the order. Your picture must be in color and make sure to explain what characteristics make your animal both an amphibian and a member of your chosen order. Be sure also to explain what the different life stages look like for your organisms (ex. tadpole->tadpole with legs->froglet->frog) and describe its habitat. Also come up with both common and scientific names for your animal.
Process
You may use Diigo to help you research as well as other reputable sources (activewild.com or amphibiaweb.org would be good places to start) to help you come up with ideas for amphibian characteristics (remember though that yours must be a wholly unique and nonexistent animal).
Evaluation
| 1 point | 2 points | 3 points | |
| Order | Order is identified, no explanation of why animal fits in that order. | Order is identified, partial explanation of why animal fits in that order. | Order is identified, full explanation of why animal fits in that order. |
| Picture | Little effort was given in the picture, no color | Effort somewhat evident in the picture, listed characteristics identifiable, partial color | Effort clearly evident in the picture, listed characteristics easily identifiable, full color |
| Life stages | Life stages listed, not explained | Life stages listed, partially explained | Life stages listed, fully explained |
| Habitat and names | Habitat or scientific name or common name | Habitat or one of scientific name and common name | Habitat and scientific name and common name |
| Formatting | Multiple errors of spelling or grammar, difficult to follow thought process | A few errors of grammar or spelling, somewhat difficult to follow thought process | Clearly formatted and easily understandable |
For each category zero points will be given if none of the listed requirements are met.
Conclusion
By completing this activity you will demonstrate your ability to research scientific information using the internet, identify important characteristics of each order of amphibians, and communicate scientific information.
