Can you identify the number of letters in the words: "bat", "sat", "mat", "at", and "cat"?

B S M A C

How does learning the sounds a letter makes help us become stronger readers?

What beginning sounds do you hear in the words: "bat", "sat", "cat", "mat", and "at"?

B S M A C

Task

This series of activities will span over a two week period. You will be introduced to five new letters and their sounds over ten school days. Using songs, dances, flip charts, and hands-on materials, we will begin to connect the letter formation(s) to their corresponding sound(s).

After whole group instruction, table groups of four will dig deeper into their independent understanding of each letter formation and its corresponding sound using playdo, shaving cream, wiki sticks, Google draw, and magnet match activities. One letter per day for five days, then repeat for a second week before evaluating.

Student A: Materials Manager (gather materials)

Student B: Photographer (take picture of finished products)

Student C: Tech Guru (upload photos to Google Drive)

Student D: House Keeper (clean and return materials)

Student A-D: form letter(s) using materials provided

Process

After whole group instruction, five tables will rotate through five fifteen minute centers: playdo, shaving cream, wiki sticks, Google draw, and a magnet match activity to practice their use of the "letter of the day". See Google slide for rotation directions.

Grade level:

Kindergarten

Subject(s):

English Language Arts

Classroom Environment:

Students will participate in this webbased activity first as a whole group from their circle seats, then in small groups at their table seats in the general ed classroom.

Individual or Group Activity:

This is a whole group/small group usit and serves as an introductory lesson to the five letters taught in Kindergarten: B, S, M, A, C

Activity:

Pre Technology Activities: Before beginning the activity, it will be important to ensure all links and interactive materials are downloaded and working properly. It will also peek interest to display large letters around the room.

Technology Activities: - Students will come to the carpet for instruction. We will begin each day (new day, new slide, new letter) with the same "Better Alphabet Song". We will then use our “magic wand” to select a student helper to sort each individual letter. Students will then pass on the wand to others for additional letter sorting.

Post Technology Activities: Once done, students will sort all five letters in small groups at their tables to practice their understanding and for informal observation/assessment from the teacher.

Relative Advantage:

Using technology through song and center rotations/Google Draw, better engages the children in the learning of the ELA standards listed above. By allowing them to work through letter sorting with their peers, they are building reading confidence and competency. Using daily repetition with the same "Better Alphabet Song" and daily center rotations, students are able to access prior knowledge and sharpen their concrete understanding of letter names and their sounds.
