Introduction

Translation Skills: 11 Most Important for Achieving Success

When translating it is very important to know the different translation rules, as well as having a wide vocabulary also helps, but practice should not be neglected. For this reason, with the help of WebQuest, we intend to put to the test the knowledge acquired in the field of translation by the third-year English students of the Universidad Tecnológica Oteima. There is a task below, in which students will be able to test their translation skills.

Task

Translate the different sentences into english using the verbs indicated:

¿Qué hiciste esta mañana? What did you do this morning?

1) Esta mañana me levanté a las 7. (to get up)

2) Después, fui a la cocina y preparé mi desayuno. (to go, to prepare)

¿Qué tomaste para desayunar? What did you have for breakfast?

3) Primero, tomé una taza grande de café negro. (to have)

4) Después, bebí un vaso de zumo de naranja. (to drink)

5) También comí una tostada con queso y (to eat)

6) Finalmente, tomé otra taza de café negro. (to have)

¿Qué hiciste después de eso? What did you do after that?

7) Fui al cuarto de baño y me duché. (to go, to take a shower)

8) Después me vestí y me puse mi maquillaje. (to get dressed, to put on my make-up)

Sali de casa y fui en coche a la ciudad. I left home and drove to the city.

9) Después me encontré con mis amigas en una cafetería y fuimos de compras. (to meet, to go shopping)

10) Finalmente, volví a casa después de la tarde. (to return)

Process

For the development of the task above, the student had to put into practice their knowledge in translation, but also in grammar, since the requested verbs had to be transformed into the past so that the sentence made sense. Here is a link that explains this: https://www.ingles.com/guia/los-verbos-en-pasado

Evaluation

The correct use of the verbs grammatically will be evaluated as well as the coherence in the translation process in each sentence, where each one will be worth 1 point, to give a total of 2 points for each sentence, giving a total of 20 points at the end. Below are the two requirements that will be evaluated, mentioned previously:

Conclusion

The purpose of using WebQuest was basically to be able to formulate a task where the student's translation ability can be put to the test, so that after the development of the task they can retrospect the process and thus improve the mistakes made in practice. Where they can also acquire other additional knowledge such as the correct use of verbs in the past.
