Implementing WebQuest to improve speaking by applying manners of articulation at Universidad Tecnológica Oteima

Introduction

In this WebQuest, we are going to be teaching you ways to improve your speaking by applying manners of articulation. The level of manners of articulation describes the way in which an obstruction opposes the air outlet during the emission of a speech sound, that is, how the articulatory organs of language, such as the tongue and lips, are configured to produce sounds. A fundamental aspect of the manners of articulation is the degree of constriction in the air outlet; for this reason, the concept is generally applied only to consonants, since in vowels the constriction is always small.

The manner of articulation in second language learning is important because pronunciation doesn’t come as naturally as when learning our first language, and talking while you sound natural in English can be hard since our mother tongue does not have all the sounds that English does.

For these reasons, WebQuest will be used as a technology tool to help you enhance your pronunciation and learn how to produce the sounds and identify them since the manner of articulation consists of nasal, stop, fricattive, affricative, approximant gilde/liquid, and lateral sounds. After reading this valuable information, you will find a couple of activities regarding this incredible topic "manner of articulation".

We expect from this activity that you can speak clearly and avoid mispronunciation while speaking with native and non-native speakers.

Task #1

In this activity you will find a set of words. In each set circle the consonants with manners of articulation for that set.

Nasal       soup               mint              king                quack                  plot
Affricative      rich                 rush             action      judge              gym

Task#2

Read the following excerpt from the book The Millionaire Next Door (page11)  by William D. Danko

"WEALTHY" DEFINED

Ask the average American to define the term wealthy. Most would give the same definition found in Webster's. Wealthy to them refers to people who have an abundance of material possessions. We define wealthy differently. We do not define wealthy, affluent, or rich in terms of material possessions. Many people who display a high consumption lifestyle have little or no investments, appreciable assets, income-producing assets, common stocks, bonds, private businesses, oil/gas rights, or timber land. Conversely, those people whom we define as being wealthy get much more pleasure from owning substantial amounts of appreciable assets than from displaying a high-consumption lifestyle.

  1. After reading, look for fricative sounds and circle each of them. Remember that fricative sounds are characterized by a "hissing noise" [f, v, θ, ð, s, z, ʃ, ʒ, and, h].

-                                                                                                                                       -

2.Identify  all the words with fricative and stop sounds at the initial position and add the symbol next to the word. Write it down in the box.

Example: cake /k/

****LOOK THE VIDEO TO KNOW ABOUT THE MANNERS OF ARTICULATION***

https://youtu.be/VaBsbQO-qo4

    1. In order to get you ready for the next part of the assignment, the initial section of the activity is a brief warm-up with four different types of articulation. You must correctly pronounce the words before choosing the appropriate response for each scenario to finish this test.

2.The second task requires you to read aloud the passage from The Millionaire Next Door (page 11).Include whatever discernible fricative sounds you can. You will also get a chance to work on your pronouncing skills.

  • After reading the text, make a selection of all the fricative sounds you observed.
  • Find the words that have a fricative and stops sounds in the initial position, and then write the associated symbol next to the word.

            3. In this task number three you have read aloud and pick the words that belongs to phonetic symbols next to space in blank.

It´ll help you recognize the sounds.

4.The last task is to associate each symbol with a couple of the words that appear inside the box:

  • You must repeatedly say the words before beginning to write them until you can position them on the appropriate symbol. You'll improve your symbol recognition while enhancing your pronunciation with this exercise.
  • You must describe two approximates (a liquid and a glide) in the last section, which is about applying information, and as an added bonus, you must provide an example of each.

           5. In the task, we will develop an activity that has the purpose of identifying the sounds that people make when pronouncing the requested words and knowing if they are doing the manners articulation process correctly. For example, if it is bilabial, dental lip, dental, palatal, or nasal, among others.

Evaluation

Through the techniques of the WebQuest, young people have captured and developed a great deal of knowledge about the manners of articulation when speaking and have improved their pronunciation through the activities that were assigned to them through the WebQuest. They have also been able to identify when it is an articulation (nasal, dental, etc.).

The Manner of articulation

The participant read aloud and uttered all the words and recognize each fricative and stop sounds that appears in the text from task  in activity #2.
Placed correctly the words of the box in each phonetic symbol.#3
The participant provided a correct definition for each phonetic symbol.#4
Select the sounds required for each word.#5

Conclusion

As as conclusion, the main purpose  of  the tasks asigned on manner of articulations  are that will help students to enhance their speaking skills and also they will learn identifying phonetics sounds while speaking.WebQuest has been very effective since it has allowed the participants to improve their skills and recognize the different manners of articulation that exist when pronouncing specific words in order to improve their way of expressing themselves, and one of those ways to improve is through the applied activities since they help them identify the manners of articulation that they will use when pronouncing.
