Topic: Letter Writing (business letter)

Objective:

  • Students will be able to write a business letter in the correct format.
  • Build their literacy skills
  • Begin by asking students if they have ever written a buisness letter before.
  • If so, who did they write it to?
  • What do they remember about writing letters?
  1. Modeling:
  • Next, model the process of writing a friendly letter.
  • Write a business letter to the principal of their school requesting textbooks for the grade 4 students.

    • Closing
    • Signature
  1. Practice:
  • Once you have modeled the process of writing a business letter, give students the opportunity to practice writing their own letters.
  • They can write to a teacher, principal, or even a member of parliament.
  • Be sure to provide students with plenty of time to write their letters.
  1. Assessment:
  • Once students have finished writing their business letters, you can assess their work in different ways.
  • You can read their letters and provide feedback, or you can have students share their letters with the class.
  • You can also have students complete a worksheet on the parts of a business letter.

Extension:

  • If students are interested, you can extend this lesson by having them create their own stamps or envelopes.
  • You can also have them research different types of letters, such as friendly letter, formal letters, and thank-you letters.

Differentiation:

   For students who are a little slower, they could be given pictures to make the work more understandble

Evaluation

Evaluation tools : books , pencils ,worksheet

Activity 1 : students will practice writing a business letter to their Minister of Education about the lack of textbooks for grade 4 students.

Activity 2 students will complete a worksheet where they will be required to identify the different parts of a business letter.

Conclusion

Feedback from students: 

Improved writing abilities: Writing letters helps pupils' writing skills in a variety of ways. They must consider what they want to say and how they want to say it, as well as use proper punctuation and spelling.

 

Increased creativity: Letter writing can provide pupils with a creative outlet. They can use their imagination to tell stories, explain their experiences, or express their feelings and opinions.

 

Improved communication abilities: Writing letters helps pupils improve their communication skills. They must learn to communicate themselves clearly and concisely, as well as listen to and respond to the opinions and feelings of others.
