Introduction
Welcome to the "Writing Good Essay Introductions" WebQuest!
In this WebQuest, you will explore different types of introductions and learn how to write effective ones that will capture your reader's attention.
You will also learn about the different components of a strong introduction, such as the hook, background information, and thesis statement.

Task
Your task is to write an effective introduction for an essay on a topic of your choice. You will research different types of introductions, brainstorm ideas, and draft and revise your introduction until you have final solid material.
Process
Research: Begin by researching different types of introductions, such as anecdotal, rhetorical, and statistical. Take notes on the key elements of each type and consider which one might work best for your topic.
Brainstorm: Once you have a sense of the different types of introductions, brainstorm ideas for your own introduction. Think about the purpose of your essay and what you want to communicate to your reader.
- What story or statistic could you use to capture their attention?
- What background information do they need to know?
- What is your thesis statement?

Draft: Use your notes and ideas to draft your introduction. Be sure to include a hook that will draw your reader in, background information that will provide context for your topic, and a clear and concise thesis statement that summarizes your main argument.
Revise: Once you have a draft of your introduction, revise it for clarity, coherence, and effectiveness. Consider the following questions as you revise:
- Does the hook capture the reader's attention?
- Is the background information relevant and interesting?
- Does the thesis statement clearly state the main argument of the essay?
Finalize: Once you have revised your introduction, finalize it by proofreading for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors. Make sure your introduction is error-free and ready to be included in your final essay.
Evaluation
Your introduction will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation (2 points)
- Use of a hook that captures the reader's attention (2 points)
