Special Education WebQuest (By: Skylar Tucker)

Introduction

The introduction of special education rights haven't always been as relevant as they are currently. It took years of individuals being vocal about their children receiving the equivalent education as their peers. It is so important for students to feel comfortable in their environment as they are receiving their education. This topic Is something that should be continued to talk about and remain relevant during school board meetings and teacher conferences.

Task

Congratulations! You've been asked to give a speech by the Department of Education at their banquet coming up in a few months.

They are asking you to create a speech or presentation that captures of the growth of Special Needs laws/rights over the past few decades. They have given you some ideas but are allowing you to have creative freedom as long as a message is delivered to the audience. They would like the presentation to be under five minutes as well. Good Luck!

Task 1- Gather facts/ dates / important events, etc.

Task 2- Pick a platform: Speech/ timeline / Prezi, etc.

Task 3- Practice within your group or to a group.

Process

Task 1- Gather facts/ dates / important events, etc.

1) Who was involved (people and places)?

2) What was the cause?

3) What was the outcome?

4) How did specific event/fact affect individuals with specials needs?

Task 2- Pick a platform: Speech/ timeline / Prezi, etc.

Does the data you've collected make more sense in chronological order? maybe create a timeline showing the growth.

Would you rather put dramatic emphasis on a certain time period or event? maybe create a speech.

Get creative!

Task 3- Practice within your group or to a group.

You are more than welcome to work with a group or individually. Just make sure you/ you guys have practiced and are well prepared before the actual presentation.

Evaluation

Your presentation will be evaluated by overall passion on the subject. We want to see that you genuinely care about this topic and imagine yourself truly presenting this to a audience who is also just as passionate. Below is rubric created to help guide you as your work on the project.

Task: Excellent (5/5) Fair (3/5)

Needed Improvement

(0/5)

Task One Had an ample amount of information about the topic that demonstrated the growth of this subject well. Had some Information that made sense to include but was missing some chunks of information that would have helped them. Did not have the correct data.
Task Two Picked a platform that collaborated well with the data they collected. Platform was well made but could have picked a different platform to better represent the information they were trying to present. Had the wrong or no platform.
Task Three Came well prepared and passionate about delivering their message to the audience.  Could tell they briefly prepared for the the presentation but could've used work on filler words, eye contact, etc.  Had little to no prep for final verbal presentation.
Score:

Conclusion

The overall goal of this assignment is for students to become familiar with the timeline of special education laws and regulations. The research this goes behind making their presentation will hopefully give them better insight on a subject that might not personally affect them, but allow them to be educated on something that has a huge impact on some of their peers. This project will also allow them to get comfortable talking in from of a classroom on a subject they might not be confident on. Teamwork is also encouraged! Good luck!
