The Prohibition Era

Introduction

The Prohibition Era, also known as the Noble Experiment, was a period in American history from 1920 to 1933 during which the production, sale, and transportation of alcoholic beverages were banned by the 18th Amendment to the United States Constitution. This ban was intended to reduce the social problems associated with alcohol consumption, such as crime, poverty, and domestic violence. Prohibition also had a significant impact on the economy. Many jobs were lost in the brewing, distilling, and hospitality industries, and the government lost tax revenue from alcohol sales. Corruption among law enforcement officials and politicians became widespread, as many were bribed to turn a blind eye to bootlegging and other illegal activities.

Task

Your task is to create a reflection from the point of view of a worker or owner of a brewing company. It should be written as journal entry in first person point of view. The reflection should be 1-3 pages in length. Work with your group member and assign tasks for a writer and editor. Discuss with your partner about how it will be formatted. Research the topic and find out what it was like at the time. Write a rough draft and discuss if it fits the criteria. Finally submit the final reflection.

Process

#1- Brainstorm and find a partner!

Who was involved?

How did this impact different parts of the country?

How was the economy affected by the law?

What made this law be passed in the first place?

#2- Resources

Find resources relevant to the topic and cite them in the final draft on a separate piece of paper.

#3- Divide work evenly

Make sure each partner contributes equally!

This should be a 50/50 effort for the both partners and not one person writing it all. Make sure there is equal effort put forth.

Evaluation

At the end of the Webquest students will read aloud their reflections to class and be graded as such.

  • Quality of information (Were all or most questions answered?)
  • Fitting to the time period (Was the information accurate to the time period?)
  • Proper formatting (Was the paper written and presented in proper formatting?)
  • Relevant resources (Were the resources used relevant to the paper presented?
Conclusion

This Webquest is a unique way for students to experience the past. It aims for students to put themselves in the shoes of a regular citizen at the time and use creativity in the process. This assignment is graded on the creativity and accurate content of the learners understanding of the topic. The challenge is writing it in a first person point of view and showing the audience how they think it might be. The student will hopefully hold on to these skills in future writing assignments.
