Introduction
When you hear the word diphthong, what do think of?
And no, it has nothing to do with underwear.
You see them and hear them in words all the time, but do you notice them?
A diphthong is a combination of two vowels, the sound that is made when pronouncing the combination within a word, is considered a diphthong.
If I were to give you a list of words, would you be able to find the diphthongs?
Or are you still thinking that the word diphthong has something to do with underwear?
Task
Today, we will work on reviewing diphthongs. This will allow you to learn and understand that a diphthong is a sound formed by two vowels in a single syllable. We will review phonetic symbol/sound “ai”, common letters “i, igh, and y”, this will allow you to be able to identify common words with this specific diphthong. Before beginning our lesson, you will watch a short video on diphthongs, and then review diphthong examples. Then, as a class, we will create a word list with the "ai" diphthong sound. We will also be doing work with our brain buddies, and come up with 3 new words we can add to our list! A Kahoot game will be played to help to help identify words that contain the “i, igh, and y”, "ai" diphthong sounds.By the end of the lesson, I hope that everyone will have a better understanding of diphthongs, especially the one we will be reviewing today! At the end of the lesson, I will hand out an exit ticket.
Process
We have discussed that the letters i, igh, and y can make the "ai" sound within a word. However, there are other letters as well, such as; ie and i_e. There are just so many possibilities! Let's watch this 10 minute video to learn more! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uD-GuuSgyk
What a great informational clip! Now, who can give me example words that contain the diphthong sound we are discussing today?
All such amazing examples! Let's take a look at the board and see all of the fantastic words that we came up with, who can count the number of words we were able to think of?
23! Amazing! I think we can find a few more though? Let's get into groups with our brain buddies and think of 3 new words together!
I think we are all KILLING it today! Who's ready to play a quick Kahoot game? Technology technician, please hand out laptops and lets get logged in.
When everyone is ready, we will begin. https://create.kahoot.it/details/197ccdd8-b35c-4d82-9be3-55c31f9f9eb5

Conclusion
You have all learned so much today! Each of you did a great job with volunteering, participating and working together throughout this whole lesson. I personally feel that everyone did fantastic with this entire lesson. However, for those who struggled slightly, we will continue to review diphthongs throughout the rest of the week. We will work as a class, small group, as well as one on one. I will be leaving up our word list and we will continue to add on to it throughput the rest of the week. I am excited to move on to other diphthongs, their sounds and letters! I am going to hand out an exit ticket, on the ticket, please write your name and circle the check if you understood today's lesson, the question mark if you still have questions, or the X if you struggled today.
