DEFINITION OF REPORT TEXT
Report is a text which presents information about something, as it is. It is as a result of systematic observation and analysis. This text Stating classification of general aspect of thing which will be discussed in general topic. In addition, this text also describing the thing which will be discussed in detail or a specific way.
Here is the example of report text:
An Elephant
Elephants are four-legged herbivorous mammals with a very huge body. They have a very distinctive body part which became their unique feature in most people mind, it is called “the trunk”. It is basically their nose, but it can also be used for several purpose besides breathing. It can be used to grasp object (food, flowers, etc), to suck and pour water, and also to do hand shake with humans. It is recorded that there are three species of elephant existed in the world. They are: The African Bush Elephant, The African Forest Elephant and The Asian Elephant.
A full grown elephant can reach 3.3 meters in height and 6.4 meters in length, with the total body weight of 12.000 kilograms. The time that a baby elephant spend in their mother womb is about 18 to 22 months. They can live up to 60 to 70 years. It is believed that an elephant have a very strong memory and also affection. It is proven by the emphaty that they show towards their dying or dead friend. They have two large ear flaps that help them in controlling their body temperature. Their legs look like pillar. It helps them to carry their super heavy body. They can perform various ways of communication for example they can communicate to each other through body touching, smell and also sound (infrasound and seismic communication). Elephants are considered to be one of endangered animals by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), because they are hunted by humans since a long time ago for their ivory.

Platypus
Platypus is a semiaquatic carnivorous egg-laying mammal of the family Omithorhynchidae. They are endemic animal of Australia which became one of animal icon of Australia besides Kangaroo. They can be found at eastern Australia and Tasmania Island. Their scientific name is Omithorhynchus anatinus.
The body of a platypus can reach the size of 50 cm in length with the body weight of 2,4 kg. Their appearance resemble a combination of some animals. Their body look like the body of a mole and beaver in the same time (flat and hairy). The bill and legs are similar to duck, so they have four webbed feet. Their tail is similar to the tail of a beaver. There are some venomous stingers on the feet of a male platypus that they can use to strike the enemy. The fur around their body and tail is waterproof. It helps to keep them warm when they are in the water. The snout of a platypus is not divided into upper and lower parts like a bird's beak. It is actually a sensory organ that allow them to detect the prey movement in the water. The mouth is located under the bill.

Definition of a Report Text
A report text is a type of document written by someone or group of people to announce the result of an investigation or announce something to the proper authorities. The information given in a report text is very general information.

Social Function of a Report Text
The purpose of a report text is to present information about something generally. It generally describes the way things are with reference to arrange of natural, manmade and social phenomenon in our environment, such as: mammals, the planets, rocks, plants, countries of region, cultures, transportations, and so on .
The Generic structures of a Report Text
- General Classification: A general classification is a part that state classification of general aspect of things, such as: animals, public places, plants, etc. It will be discussed in general.
- Description: This part gives describing of the things which will be discussed in detail, in terms of: parts (and their function), qualities, habits and behavior
The Linguistic Features
- Focus on generic participant: A report text always introduces group or general aspect and focus on general nouns, such as: ‘Platypus’, ‘Bees’, etc.
- A report text uses relating verb and action verb, for example: Relating verb : Reptiles are scalyanimal,etc.Action verb : Birds fly in the sky, etc.
- A report text uses of simple present tense, for example: Platypus lives in streams, male platypus does not need any burrow, etc
- The language used in a report text is a scientific language, for example: water contains oxygen and hydrogen, etc.
- A report text uses Conditionals and logical connectives, such as: but, in other hand, etc.
