Eco-Tourism in South America

Introduction

Tourism is when you spend time away from home in a specific place in order to relax and have fun.

Eco-Tourism is when you do this with the health of the environment of the place you're visiting in mind.

South America is a beautiful continent, and tourism is a huge industry for South American countries. However, as species have begun to go extinct, as the Amazon is cut down, and as the climate changes, these countries have had to consider how they will focus on saving their biodiverse and historically important environments.

Task

Your task for the next couple of days is in 3 parts.

Part 1

First, you will look at 4 different tourist spots in South America. You will fill out Part 1 of the document in Google Classroom with your findings about the climate, environment, wildlife, and activities in these areas.

Part 2

Next, you will examine the threats to each of these locations, and record your findings in Part 2 of the document in Google Classroom.

Part 3

Finally, you will figure out 3 different solutions that these places could work on (or are already working on) to improve their chances of staying safe and healthy. You will present your solutions in the form of a 3-cell storyboard.

Process

Part 1

Look through the locations linked below, and fill in the graphic organizer with what you've learned in the Part 1 section of the document posted in Google Classroom. If the given links don't provide all the information you need, use Encyclopedia Britannica to fill in the gaps, gather images, etc.

Part 2

Look through the resources linked below, and fill in the graphic organizer with what you've learned in the Part 2 section of the document posted in Google Classroom.

Part 3

Use StoryboardThat to create a 3-cell storyboard showing your 3 different solutions.

  1. Click “create a storyboard” near the bottom on the homepage.

  2. Start designing your storyboard! Each cell (square box) has to show one of your solutions. You can add people, backgrounds, items, animals, etc., and you can change most things’ colors!

  3. Once you’re satisfied with your work, click “save” and log in with your student Google account.

  4. Title your storyboard, then click “continue”. When it returns to the edit page, click “save and exit”.

  5. Click the “download” option, then choose “high-res image”. Then, just add that to your document.

  6. Write at least 3 sentences explaining each solution and how they help under the image.

  7. Now you’re done!

Evaluation

Parts 1 and 2 will be worth 25 points.

  • correct/good answers in each box (25)

Part 3 will be worth 25 point.

  • 3 different solutions chosen (3)
  • storyboard shows solutions clearly (3)
  • storyboard is creative (3)
  • correct amount of sentences (9)
  • grammar and punctuation are appropriate (1)
  • sentences explain solutions clearly (6)
Conclusion

You've done it! Great job, I appreciate your effort. I hope you learned a couple of things from this project.

Maybe you'll go on an adventure to one of these places one day!

Teacher Page

This WebQuest was created by Gibson White. I currently teach 7th grade geography.

This WebQuest will help students understand the importance of eco-tourism, centered on South America. They will complete 2 graphic organizers (online) and the make their own storyboard showing their solutions in action. This should contribute to their understanding of the physical geography of South America, as well as the effects of climate change and our potential responses to it.
