Components of Fitness

Introduction

What does it mean to be physically fit? What constitutes fitness?  How does one improve, maintain or become physically fit?  These are all questions those seeking to "get in shape" should be asking themselves.  The search for physical fitness can be boiled down into 5 categories.  These 5 fitness categories all contribute to a persons overall health and wellness.  This webquest has been designed to help students learn and develop a greater appreciation for physical fitness and wellness.  Research on each component will help students gain a better understanding of how each component relates to overall physical fitness.

Task
Process

Based on the information you just examined, you will now complete a personal health canvas course. This course will supplement what you learned and help guide you through the examination of personal health and the process by which you should examine your health.  After completing this course move on to the Evaluation section.

In this course, be sure to take notes and complete the "reflections" as you complete each section.  You will need this for the evaluation section of this WebQuest. 

Evaluation

Now that you have completed your review of the websites and Canvas Course, complete one of the following essays and on of the following brochures:

  • Two page, 500 or more word essay on the components of fitness
  • Two page, 500 or more word essay reflection on what you learned in the canvas course
  • A trifold brochure that  discusses each of the 5 components of fitness in deep detail and how to apply them to an everyday fitness plan
  • A trifold brochure that discusses each of the sections of the canvas course, discussing in detail each of the modules and how to apply them to an everyday fitness plan

 

Conclusion

This multiday WebQuest was intended to supplement information students would have already received in Freshman health.  Each PE course builds on that early introductory knowledge and it is essential to have a sound foundational understanding of base fitness in order to develop more elaborate fitness programming.  These assignments were designed to get the student to think more critically about the application of fitness principles and tools that help them create fitness plans for life.  If students dig into this material they will find a depth of information that only enhances their foundational knowledge.
