Ohio Indians

Introduction

             

Ohio's original settlers where American Indians.  They arrived in 13,000 B.C., and where hunters and gathers.  There were several Indian tribes that that lived in or claimed land in Ohio.  Some of the tribes include:

  • Delaware
  • Miami
  • Ottawa
  • Wyandot
  • Shawnee
  • Chippewa
  • Iroquois
Task

Task

The class will be divided into groups of 3.  You are going to join an Ohio Indian tribe.  Your job will be to keep a daily journal of your life within the tribe.  You will need to include:

  • What you eat
  • How, when and what you hunt 
  • What is in your garden
  • If you trade and what you trade
  • What part of Ohio you live
  • What your house looks like
  • Who is in your family
  • Who is the Chief
  • What you do for fun
  • Anything else interesting about your tribe

The group will create a (teacher approved) visual aid.  And will complete a 5 minute presentation.

 

Process

Each group will be:

  1. assigned a tribe
  2. need to use provided websites for resources
  3. create 3 daily journal entries
  4. meet with the teacher to discuss an appropriate visual aid for your assigned tribe.
  5. make a visual aid
  6. present a 5 minute class presentation
