Harvey's Tissue Webquest

Introduction

"Life, we learn too late, is in the living, the tissue of every day and hour." -Stephen Leacock

What does this quote mean, "...the tissue of every day and hour"? What is a tissue? Why is the author referring to life and living as the tissue of every day?

Scenario: You, a 17-year-old student, tend to be clumsy at times and happen to scratch your face while exercising. After the bleeding is over you apply topical antibiotic and a band-aid. The problem? The homecoming dance is only six weeks away and you are worried about the scratch turning into a scar. The solution? Try to find a medicine that will reduce the chance of a scar forming. But, you don't trust your beautiful face to just any scar-reducing cream! You want to understand how scars form and what the medicine will do to reduce it, before you trust putting it on your face.

Webquest Purpose: To help understand how scars form and how scar-reducing medicine works, you will: research the different types of tissues in your body, determine which type of tissue causes scars and how, and determine how scar-reducing creams work. You will then make your determination if scar-reducing medicine is a viable choice to put on your scratch.

Ready to start your project? Then move on the the Task section!

Task

There are five steps to your task:

1. Research the four types of tissues in your body. They are: epithelial, connective, muscular, and nervous.

2. Determine which type of tissue causes scars and how scars form.

3. Research scar-reducing creams including how they work and what they are made from.

4. Create a project to share what you have learned and answer whether you will use scar-reducing cream on your scratch, using evidence you have gathered.

5. Briefly analyze the quote found on the home page of the webquest.

Ready..set...GO!

Process

Step 1: To research about the types of tissue, click on the links below and read the information. Take notes for each question and task as you go; these will be turned in with your project. You may also choose to watch the videos to help in your learning.

National Cancer Institute: SEER Training Modules

Mc-Graw-Hill Company: Tissue of the Human Body

Georgia Highlands College: Classification of Tissues

If you choose to watch the videos, please watch them in order to benefit your understanding.

Tissues of the Human Body: What is Histology?  (Video 1)

Tissues of the Human Body: What is Connective Tissue?  (Video 2)

Tissues of the Human Body: What is Physiology? (Video 5- this video explains muscular tissue)

Step 2: Research what type of tissue causes scars and how scars form- specifically looking for scars that form on skin, similar to the scratch you received. Click on the links below and fill out the appropriate section of the provided notes.

                    How Scars Form

Step 3: Research Mederma ®, a common scar-reducing medicine. Mederma ® is a very well-known cream that is said to reduce the visibility and appearance of scars and is stated as the #1 brand recommended by doctors. If you trust any medicine to put on your beautiful face, it might be Mederma ® but you want to make sure it is safe and that you understand how it works, before you try it. Click on the links below and fill out the appropriate section of the provided notes.

Livestrong: How Does Mederma ® Work On The Skin?

Step 4: Using the notes you have taken so far in this webquest, create a project to show what you have learned and what you have decided about using Mederma ®. There are several choices you have in a project- read each one below carefully. Each project will be required to demonstrate the same knowledge about each tissue type and scars.

Project A: Write and illustrate a children's book, explaining information about the four types of tissues and scars.   Details: The book needs to be appealing to children and explain the information in terms kids can understand. However, make sure to include all the information to earn all the points- don't leave out information because you are writing it for kids. The book can be hand-written, computer-generated, or a combination of both (i.e. typed dialogue/information with hand-drawn pictures). There is no minimum or maximum length to the book, as long as all the information is included.

Project B: Design and film an entertaining video explaining the four types of tissues and scars.    Details: You can star in the video by yourself or have friends help you in the video. Be creative about how you share the information and make sure to include all of the information. You can choose from many different styles to present or use a combination of them- speaking, music, acting, visuals, puppets- be creative! There is no minimum or maximum length the video needs to be, as long as all the information is included.

Project C: Write a report explaining the four types of tissues and scars.   Details: The report needs to be descriptive and explain the information in a detailed manner. It can be computer-generated or hand-written, as long as the hand-writing is neat and legible! If computer-generated, please double space, use 1-inch margins, and 12 point font. The report needs to be written for a high school or adult audience, so make sure the writing is age-appropriate. Very important: write in your own words! Learn the information and write what you learned, do not just copy and paste from online resources. You may use some cited information but make sure to accurately cite your resources! For help with that, go to this link: Purdue Online Writing Lab. There is no minimum or maximum length the report needs to be, as long as it includes all the information.

Project D: Create a PSA (public service announcement) explaining to the public about the four types of tissues and scars.  Details: The PSA can be either a newspaper article or a brochure. For both options: write the PSA as if your project would be printed for a real audience to read- keep that in mind as you write it. Both options can be either computer-generated or hand-written, as long as the handwriting is neat and legible! You can find templates for either option in Microsoft Word if you would like to use one. Make sure to include all the information.

Project E: Design and write a comic book using the characters to explain the four types of tissues and scars.  Details: Create some new comic book characters to discuss and teach each other the information about tissues and scars. The comic book can be either computer-generated or hand-drawn. If you would like to use the computer to create the comic, use this website: Make Beliefs Comix.Color is not a requirement, but would add creativity points. There is no minimum or maximum for the length of your comic book, as long as all of the information is included.

Step 5: In addition to your project, read the quote about tissues found on the Home page and write a short paragraph about what you think the author means by the quote. Think about what you learned tissues are and how they function, as you write your paragraph. This can be hand-written or typed.

Requirements for ALL projects:

1. Include ALL of the information listed below!

    - Describe all four types of tissues and their functions including the subtypes or different classifications for epithelial, connective, and muscular tissue.

    - Name several specific locations where each type of tissue can be found.

    - Describe specific details or unique characteristics of each type of tissue.

    - Describe how scars form, including what type of tissue creates scars and why scars look different than the rest of the skin.

    - Describe how scar-reducing creams such as Mederma® work.

    - Discuss why you would or would not use a scar-reducing cream on your facial scratch and explain your reasoning.

2. Make sure your project is neat, creative, and easy to read/view.

3. Don't forget to complete step 5- the paragraph about the quote.

4. Do your own work!!

5. Cite your resources at the end of your project. For help, see this website: Purdue Online Writing Lab.

6. Have completed project turned in by the due date!

Grading

Your project will be graded with a rubric, each rubric being slightly different based on the type of project completed. To see the rubrics, go to theEvaluation page of the webquest.

Conclusion

Congratulations! You have now learned the most important information about the tissues that make up your body. This information will be important for you to know throughout the entire school year! All of the organs and organ systems that make up our body are composed of these four tissues and we will discuss these tissues in every single chapter and unit!

Teacher Page

This webquest is designed for high school students taking an introductory Anatomy & Physiology class.

The project has students research the four main types of tissues in the human body: epithelial, connective, muscular, and nervous including subtypes of each category. Students learn the functions of the tissues, where they are located in the body, and unique characteristics of each. The tissues will be covered again as students learn each body system.  After students learn about tissues, they research how scars form and from what tissue. They also learn how Mederma®, a well-known scar reducing cream works. Lastly, students have to decide if they will use Mederma® on their own skin.
