Introduction
We have been studying how to define independence. We have discussed how independence
establishes one’s position in American society. We are now going to discuss independence of women’s
role in society in the 19 th century compared to today. But independence goes further than just
establishing our roles within society.
Independence can mean having freedom of one’s mind and soul. We are going to discover how when
one struggles with one’s mental health, he/she/they are not truly independent.
Many of us struggle with mental health issues, therefore, we need to be able to address them so that
we can truly be independent.

are going to see how our research relates to the short story, “The Yellow Wallpaper.” As you read the
story think about how the main character loses her independence not only because of her role in society
but because of her mental health.
