Welcome grade 10 learner! You are now logged into the English Home Language WebQuest. The purpose of this WebQuest is to revise and learn more about the concept of an argumentative essay and how to formulate this essay. Argumentative essays are important to help build your reasoning and thinking skills. You will be provided with all sources to complete an assessment task.

Task
In this WebQuest, you will be assigned an assessment task in which you are required to compose an argumentative essay, choosing from the topics below:
- TikTok has become the new YouTube.
- Education should become free in South Africa.
- All schools should have cafeterias.
- Technology made society better.
Instructions:
- Choose one of the above statements for your argumentative essay which you either support or oppose.
- Your essay should consist of 350 words.
- Include a word count at the end of your essay.
- Ensure you have a strong thesis statement.
- Pay attention to spelling and grammar.
- This is an individual task
- Due date: 20th September 2022
- Written tasks are prohibited, you are required to submit your assessment task in a MS Word Document.

Process
To complete this assessment task, follow the guidelines below:
Step 1: Evaluate the statements provided and weigh out the pros and cons. Choose the statement you feel you can write more about. You can either support the statement or oppose it.
Step 2: Planning your essay is important. Use a mind map method to brainstorm your ideas and points you would like to make in your essay. (You may use other methods to plan your essay, I have provided a YouTube link below to assist with different methods you may use to plan any essay.

Refer to this PowerPoint as additional notes I have prepared to guide you to complete this essay:
NB: There is a small practice activity in this PowerPoint to help you practice writing strong thesis statements. Attempt the activity and send them to your peers to mark and ensure you are on the right track!!
Step 3: Start your essay! Now that you have brainstormed ideas and have strong points for your argument, start writing your rough draft for your essay. Remember to keep to the correct format of an argumentative essay.
Step 4: After you have completed a rough draft of the argumentative essay, proofread the essay. Check grammar and spelling. To help you, read the essay out loud to yourself. This will help you pick up on any mistakes made. (Please proofread your own work).
Step 5: After proofreading your essay, type it out in a MS Word Document and check spelling and grammar once more. Submit your final draft and stick to the due date.
Tips and time management to complete this task?
You are to work at your own pace; however, I have provided a time management guideline to assist you. This assessment task can be completed over 3 days.
Day 1: Choose the statement you would like to argue and gather information about your topic.
Day 2: Start planning and brainstorming your essay and attempt your rough draft.
Day 3: Proofread your essay, make changes and type the essay. Submit your final draft.
Some learners take more time than others, so take your time and don’t rush this assessment task.
Tips for the essay:
- Make use of transactional words to ensure coherence in your essay.
- Avoid using pronouns and sentences such as “I believe”, as an argumentative essay should be factual with strong arguments.
- Think of this essay as a debate.
- Plan, plan, and plan!
- You may use external sources from the internet as evidence to justify your arguments.
- Once again, don’t rush. You have ample time to complete this assessment task.
- Refer to the rubric to see how your essay will be evaluated and marked.

Recommendations to novice educators when creating WebQuests for learners:
Educators need to be proactive and dynamic beings. We have loads to complete and sometimes it feels as if there is not enough time in the day, term, or even the year. WebQuests assists educators to complete work and allows learners to complete topics remotely. WebQuests encourage critical thinking skills and independent learning. This platform can be used for any subject or module! It is another tool to assist teachers.
Tips for creating your WebQuest:
- Be creative! Try to make learning fun for the learner and capture their interest.
- Don’t spoon-feed learners, but ensure instructions are clear and provide them with enough materials to do their independent learning.
- Provide enough materials, don’t overdo it, and add too many links for them to visit.
- Provide guidelines to assist them with what is expected from them and what their next step should be.
- Allow them to do the work!
- Be straight to the point to avoid learners becoming overwhelmed with having much to read.
- Be transparent with how you will be assessing them, this helps them to understand what is expected from them as well.
- Include visual aids to keep learners interested as it creates a fun atmosphere.
NB: Your WebQuest should be enticing and appealing, try not to bore learners with dull WebQuests.
