Introduction to Transformations

Introduction

Have you ever looked at the Golden Arches at McDonald's and noticed anything about them? Or maybe you have noticed interesting facts about the Audi or even the Mercedes symbol. If not, after today you may look at these logos, and many others, a little differently.

Today you will discover the 3 types of transformations, known as rigid motions. Transformations can be seen everywhere if you pay attention, you will use real images to identify which transformations are used.

You will discovery facts about the following transformations

          ROTATION             REFLECTION        TRANSLATION

Many of the logos that you see every day are created using one or more of these transformations.

Task

Using the websites provided, gather as much information as you can regarding the 3 rigid motions- Reflection, Rotation, Translation.  After you have collected as much information as you can, you will complete a worksheet which identifies which rigid motion was used.

At the conclusion of this WebQuest you will be able to:

- identify which transformation is used in a given picture;

- perform basic reflections, rotations and translations;

- apply your knowledge to real world scenarios.

Pay close attention to the following

  • Definition of "Rigid Motion";
  • Definition of Reflection;
  • Definition of Rotation;
  • Definition of Translation.

Conclusion

Rigid motions are transformations that occur when the shape/image does not change shape or size. There are 3 types of rigid motions, which you had the opportunity to investigate on your own. Please be prepared to share what you learned today with your peers in class tomorrow. We will begin class with a discussion on everything that was covered in our WebQuest.

**Think about the logos mentioned earlier (McDonalds, Audi, Mercedes), now do you notice anything? Try to bring another logo to class tomorrow where we may one of our transformations used.
