In this web quest, you will have the chance to learn and formulate an essay by using the provided resources to successfully complete the assessment task.

In this web quest, a task will be provided where you are required to formulate an essay based on prior knowledge of two topics learnt in class which is either ‘Contemporary socio-economic issues’ OR ‘The macro environment’.

Please adhere to the following instructions of this task:

  • This is an individual task that requires attentiveness and consideration.
  • Every learner will be scored out of 40 according to the rubric to follow.
  • The submission date is 15th September 2022. [Please note: No extensions will be given].
  • You are required to submit your assignment in a MS Word Document, renaming the document to your name, surname, grade, and assessment title. You are encouraged to use the school’s computer lab to complete your task.
  • NO written tasks will be accepted.

The following steps are provided to successfully complete the essay writing task:

Step 1: Study the following topics required for information to build the content of your essay. The two topics you will be tested on is ‘Contemporary socio-economic issues’ and ‘The macro environment’. You will find these notes in your Business Studies information booklets under ‘Business Roles’ and ‘Business Environments’.

Step 2: Find the attached PowerPoint presentation link for assistance in formulating the essay. This presentation is very useful and helpful in starting off your essay the proper way. It is recommended that you research for extra information on WCED portals for comprehension purposes, but most of your understanding will come from this PowerPoint presentation.

Step 3: Find the attached URL links. These URLs consist of past grade 10 Business Studies papers and memos where you would find essays on various topics in this subject. This will be helpful for study purposes toward examination time.

Step 4: Watch the attached video to guide you with further explanation on how to formulate your essay and the marking guidelines required for you to pass this essay writing assessment.

This task will consume three class periods over three days:

Day 1- Study the two topics you will be tested on to form your essay. Additionally, read through the PowerPoint presentation prepared for you to learn all about the format of a Business Studies essay. More so, you are welcome to research for extra information to build on your own understanding. 

Day 2- You will complete the task individually without the notes in your Business Studies information booklets to avoid copying in your essay.

Day 3- Every learner would have completed and handed in their essays for the marking process to occur. The marksheet will appear on the class group as an attached document.

The tips recommended below is advisable in completing this task:

  1. Read the scenario and instructions of the essay questions very carefully.
  2. On a piece of paper, outline the format needed to start your essay so that you would not forget to add in the necessary headings (remember the headings count for marks).
  3. Check the mark allocation under the instructions of the essay to know the number of valid points required to include as information in your essay.
  4. Always include headings or sub-headings to show cohesiveness and logical structure. This makes it easier for you as the learner to produce your essay, and for the marker to mark it.
  5. Remember that essays for Business Studies does not follow a paragraph form (this is noted in the PowerPoint presentation as well as the YouTube video, i.e., hence it is compulsory to go through these).
  6. You do not add in the word count for the essay, but you do add in the required number of points according to the mark allocation.

As an educator, we have the desire to make our lessons interesting for active participation and learning to happen by using web quests to design your lesson content, class activities or assessment tasks. Here are a few suggestions that you may want to use to create web quest lessons for your subject content:

  • Introduction – enticing your learners as to what the lesson will entail and how they will go about completing activities. You may include an introductory video of you introducing the lesson or of the topic itself. 
  • Task- describing the proposed task or activity to your learners. Here you can include the task, its instructions, description of the task, and the learning objectives of the lesson. 
  • Process- describes the steps, tips, and resources (PowerPoint presentations/ videos/ notes/ images/ games, etc.) needed to accomplish the set tasks.
  • Evaluation- includes the marking guidelines and/ or rubrics to grade the learners.
  • Conclusion- includes feedback from the educator to the class, reflection activities, and the following topic to study for the next lesson. You may need to include resources for the learner in preparation for the next lesson topic. 

Important: You may also include visual aids to make your web quest/s appealing for the learners such as using images or videos.
