Introduction

Welcome to WINTER GAMES UNIT! 

Do you know how many winter game are there ?

In February 2022,  Winter Olympic athletes have competed in the following sports:

  • Alpine Skiing

  • Biathlon (a mixture of cross-country skiing and rifle shooting)

  • Bobsleigh (a timed race down an ice track in a sledge)

  • Cross Country Skiing

  • Curling (teams move a granite stone towards a target across the ice using special brooms)

  • Figure Skating

  • Freestyle Skiing

  • Ice Hockey

  • Luge (riding on a sledge feet first down an ice track)

  • Nordic Combined (cross country skiing and ski jumping)

  • Short Track Speed Skating

  • Skeleton (riding on a sledge headfirst down an ice track)

  • Ski Jumping

  • Speed Skating

  • Snowboard

Here's you can read 10 Facts about the Winter Olympics

1. The Winter Olympics originated from an international winter sports event called the Nordic Games, which first took place in Sweden in 1901.

2. The games would last just over a week and accompany the Summer Olympics. Events included ice hockey, skiing, speed skating and figure skating.

3. Chamonix, in France, played host to International Sports Week in 1924, which in 1925 would become known as the first Winter Olympics.

4. There were no Winter Olympics between 1936 and 1948 because of the Second World War.

5. Until 1992, the Summer and Winter Olympics took place in the same year. From 1992, they’ve been taking place two years apart.

6. Snowboarding was introduced to the Winter Olympics in Nagano, 1998.

7. South Korea was the host country of the previous Winter Olympics in 2018.

8. The Winter Olympics in Beijing 2022 will use some of the same sporting venues and arenas as the Summer Olympics of 2008.

9. Did you know that an Olympic gold medal isn’t actually made of gold, and hasn’t been since 1912? It’s mostly produced from silver.

10. And last but not least, we probably know that only the top three athletes receive a medal. However, if you finish in the top eight, you receive a diploma from the International Olympic Committee.
