Introduction
Did you know that there is a lot more that goes into a TV show or movie than you think? Are you ready to be a part of putting one together? Putting together a video production requires all hands on deck, everyone must be on their game in order for the final result to come out successfully. Without further ado, let's make a production!
Timeframe: 6 Weeks
Grade Level: 9-12th
Students coming into this assignment already have basic undertanding of each role that they will be engaging in. All of the tasks and resources used in this lesson will help the students apply their knwoledge to a real world and work like scenario
Task
Each student will pick a talk show or game show on TV and recreate it here in the studio at school. Each student will be the producer and director of their show. Every student will play an important role in another student's production. The roles (outside of the director) are: 2 talent, 3 camera operators, a boom mic operator, a teleprompter operator, and a video editor. You will first create a script of your show. Each student will be given a studio date for them to film their show, and then the editor will put everything together and edit anything in or out that the director chooses
TEKS Objectives:
- The student applies leadership characteristics to student leadership and professional development activities. The student is expected to: (A) employ leadership skills to accomplish goals and objectives by analyzing the various roles of leaders within organizations, exhibiting problem-solving and management traits, describing effective leadership styles, and participating in civic and community leadership and teamwork opportunities to enhance skills; (B) employ teamwork and conflict-management skills to achieve collective goals; (C) establish and maintain effective working relationships by providing constructive praise and criticism, demonstrating sensitivity to and value for diversity, and managing stress and controlling emotions; (D) prepare for meetings by developing goals and objectives to achieve within a scheduled time and producing agendas; (E) conduct and participate in meetings to accomplish work tasks by achieving goals and objectives within a scheduled time, producing meeting minutes, including decisions and next steps; and using parliamentary procedures, as needed; and (F) employ mentoring skills to inspire and teach others.
- The student applies pre-production processes. The student is expected to: (A) analyze target audience to identify needs and wants; (B) write and edit scripts;
- The student applies production processes. The student is expected to: (A) design color and compositional elements; (B) design characters, environments, and props; (I) render scenes.
- The student applies post-production processes. The student is expected to: (A) edit; (B) produce titles and credits; (C) add visual effects and processing; (D) add audio effects and processing; and (E) produce output.
Process
- Students pick a TV or Game show that they want
- Students will be required to watch at least 3 episodes from the show to get a feel for what the final product is supposed to look like
- Ex: Jeopardy consist of a certain structure and uses graphics where the host reads the question from
- Ex: ESPN First Take has a panel of 3 people and the sports topics and commentary are presented in a timely and structured manner
- Carefully watch the episodes and take notes of what is happening in the show. What makes it interesting?
- Students will then be assigned to be the crew in other students' shows.
- The crew roles are:
- Producer/ Director
- Camera Operator
- Boom Mic Operator/ Audio Manager
- Talent
- Teleprompter Operator
- Editor
- The responsibilities will be equally distributed so that every student will perform each role in this production process
- Each editor will need to combine all of the footage into one video where the video is showing the person speaking
- Each editor wil also add a title graphic at the beginning, instrumental background music, and ending credits listing each crew member's first and last name, and the role they played

Evaluation
Students will be evaluated at multiple times during this project. Different evaluations include but are not limited to:
- Checking and grading student notes of the show they chose
- Affirming they watched at least 3 full episodes of their show after selecting it - 10% of grade
- Watching and taking notes of the recourse videos posted of each crew role to maximize performance
- Teacher will carefully walk and monitor each process to make sure students are listening to what their directors are telling them to do.
- Teacher will work with the directors to bring out their confidence and help them lead others effectively
- Final video grade will go to the producer of the show - 35% of grade
- Each person will also have a grade based on how well they contributed in someone else's show - 20% of grade
- Each producer will draft a peer review sheet giving each of their crew members a rating out of 10 and will write a brief summary on why they gave them that rating - 15% of grade
- Each producer will then type a half page summary on Google Docs of all the things that went well - 20% of grade
Conclusion
At the end of this students will have accomplished the TEKS objectives as well as the objective mentioned in the Introduction page
