Semantics: sense relations

Introduction

Hello everyone!

In this WebQuest you are going to differentiate between types of sense relation which are HOMONOMY and POLYSEMY.

This branch of semantics that studies word meaning and sense relations is called LEXICAL SEMANTIC.

Read the sentences carefully to know the correct answer.

Task

1) Please write the definition of each terms that we mentioned below.

2) Decide whether the following sentences contain examples of polysemy or homonymy.

  1. He drank a glass of milk.
  2. He forgot to milk the cow.
  3. I like to lie here for a few moments.
  4. It is not good to lie to your friend.
  5. The enraged actor sued the magazine.
  6. He read the magazine.
  7. I met  a Pole yesterday.
  8. The flag is on the pole.

Now you have finished studying and learning about the different types of sense relations and now you should be able to differentiate  between them. 

Now for the assessment:

For the first task which is to define each term, you will score 4 marks, each definition is worth two marks only.

As for the second task, which is to differentiate between homonymy and polysemy through sentences, it is also worth 8 marks, each sentence worth one mark only.

Anyone who makes a project or presentation regarding to the next topic will earn extra 5 marks.
